شملَتencompassed ببقائِكِمthrough your continued presence النعَمُthe blessings
شملَت ببقائِكِم النعَمُ
وسمتِand rose برجائِكُمُthrough hope in you الهِمَمُthe aspirations
وسمتِ برجائِكُمُ الهِمَمُ
Blessings have spread through your continued presence.
Your presence has brought prosperity,
And aspirations have risen through hope in you.
And your hopes have aimed high aspirations.
وهَمَتand poured down ديمٌsteady rains منfrom راحَتِكُمyour palm
وهَمَت ديمٌ من راحَتِكُم
هيهاتَhow impossible! تُساجِلُهاrival them الديَمُthe steady rains
هيهاتَ تُساجِلُها الديَمُ
And steady rains have poured from your palm;
Peace yearns for your comfort,
Never could the rains rival them.
Alas, bloodshed disputes it.
وعَنَتand submitted لعزائِمكمto your firm resolves عربٌArabs
وعَنَت لعزائِمكم عربٌ
تشقىsuffer بصوارِمَهاby their sharp swords العجَمُthe non-Arabs
تشقى بصوارِمَها العجَمُ
And Arabs have bowed to your firm resolves;
The Arabs have bent to your resolves,
Non-Arabs suffer beneath their sharp swords.
As the non-Arabs break before your blades.
أسدٌlions تنقادُsubmit الأسدُthe lions لهاto them
أسدٌ تنقادُ الأسدُ لها
بهمٌvaliant warriors تنقادُsubmit لهاto them البهَمُthe valiant warriors
بهمٌ تنقادُ لها البهَمُ
Lions to whom the lions submit;
A lion that lions submit to,
Valiant warriors to whom valiant warriors submit.
And a torrent that torrents comply with.
حمدتwere praised شيمthe ways الأيامof the days بكمbecause of you
حمدت شيم الأيام بكم
ولكمand how often ذمتwere condemned منهاof them الشيمthe ways
ولكم ذمت منها الشيم
The days' ways have been praised because of you;
The qualities of time have praised you,
Yet how often their ways were condemned!
And for you has its honor vouched.
بهرتdazzled أنوارُthe lights خلافتكمof your caliphate
بهرت أنوارُ خلافتكم
وسماءُand the sky العلمof knowledge بهاin it علمُa beacon
وسماءُ العلم بها علمُ
The lights of your caliphate have dazzled;
The lights of your caliphate have dazzled,
And in the sky of knowledge stands a beacon.
And the sky of knowledge has flagged them.
فرأىso saw منwhoever ليسis not لهfor him بصرٌsight
فرأى من ليس له بصرٌ
ووعىand understood منwhoever كانwas بهin him صممُdeafness
ووعى من كان به صممُ
So those without sight have seen,
So one sightless has seen,
And those who were deaf have understood.
And one deaf has heard.
وانافَand towered المجدُglory علىabove زُحلٍSaturn
وانافَ المجدُ على زُحلٍ
وأتىand came بغرائبهِwith its wonders الكرمُgenerosity
وأتى بغرائبهِ الكرمُ
And glory has towered above Saturn,
Glory has flocked to Saturn,
And generosity has brought forth its wonders.
And bounty has brought its marvels.
أعياbaffled البلغاءَthe eloquent مقامكمyour station
أعيا البلغاءَ مقامكم
ولوand even if آنthat (apparently intended as أن) مقالهمtheir speech حكمwise sayings
ولو آن مقالهم حكم
Your station has baffled the eloquent,
Orators falter before your eminence,
Even if their words are words of wisdom.
Though their words be wise.
العيدthe festival أحقُّmore deserving بتهنئةٍof congratulations
العيد أحقُّ بتهنئةٍ
فلهُfor it has بكمthrough you فخرٌpride عممُcomplete
فلهُ بكم فخرٌ عممُ
The festival is more deserving of congratulations,
Fitting most to give congratulations
For through you its pride is complete.
On a feast day your repute has broadcast.
دمتمmay you endure والكلُّand everyone يلوذُseeks refuge بكمwith you
دمتم والكلُّ يلوذُ بكم
منfrom صرفِthe vicissitudes الدهرِof time ويعتصِمُand seeks protection
من صرفِ الدهرِ ويعتصِمُ
May you endure, while all seek refuge with you
May you endure, as all take refuge in you
From time's vicissitudes, and seek protection.
From fate's caprice and fortify themselves.
