    The rose atop its trees is but

    like the most majestic of kings in his bearing.

    Pleasing in appearance and inner nature, and [perhaps peerless],

    in its lovely adornments and its qualities.

    خجَلُ الخدّ من سنا خَجَلاتِه

    Musk’s scent comes from the fragrance of its wafts;

    the cheek’s blush, from the radiance of its blushes.

    The redness of rubies was blended with pearls,

    and so brought it forth in keeping with its own nature,

    just as from generosity and valor arose

    al-Himyari’s character, poison to his enemies.

    فرضُهُ في صِلاته كَصَلاتِه

    If he promises, fulfillment is binding upon him;

    his obligation in giving is like his obligation in prayer.
