أَنَّthat بدرَthe full moon of الوردِthe rose فيin المُلكِkingship مُحقwas effaced
أَنَّ بدرَ الوردِ في المُلكِ مُحق
The narcissus bore witness, as one speaking truth,
The narcissus bore true witness
that the rose’s full moon was eclipsed in kingship;
That the full moon of roses rightly reigns

في سماءِ الحُسنِ بالمُلكِ أَحق
and saw that the bahār flower on view
And saw that the shining springtime
in beauty’s sky had a greater claim to kingship.
In the sky of beauty rightly claims the throne
فمتىso whenever كُذّبَwas called false قولٌa saying أَبداًever
فمتى كُذّبَ قولٌ أَبداً
قيلَit was said فيconcerning قولتهِhis utterance هذيthis صَدَقhe spoke the truth
قيلَ في قولتهِ هذي صَدَق
So whenever any saying was belied,
So when was any word ever called a lie
of this utterance of his it was said: “He spoke the truth.”
That was said in these words of his, truthful and wise
