نهارُthe daytime of خيريكَKhayrik فيin ليلهِhis night
نهارُ خيريكَ في ليلهِ
كذلكَlikewise اللَيلُthe night نهارُthe daytime of الأَديبthe man of letters
كذلكَ اللَيلُ نهارُ الأَديب
Khayrik’s daytime is in his night.
Likewise, night is the man of letters’ daytime.
يَنمُّhe spreads gossip فيهِin it وينامُand he sleeps الضُّحىthe forenoon
يَنمُّ فيهِ وينامُ الضُّحى
تصاوناًto safeguard himself عنfrom كلِّevery امرٍaffair مَغيبhidden
تصاوناً عن كلِّ امرٍ مَغيب
He spreads gossip in it and sleeps through the forenoon,
to keep himself clear of every hidden affair.
كأَنَّماas though اللّيلُthe night حبيبٌa beloved لهُto him
كأَنَّما اللّيلُ حبيبٌ لهُ
فهوso he إذاwhen حلَّarrives اكتسىclothes himself in كلevery طيبfragrance
فهو إذا حلَّ اكتسى كل طيب
As though night were his beloved,
so when it arrives, he clothes himself in every fragrance.
كأنَّماas though الصُّبحُthe dawn رقيبٌa watcher لهُover him
كأنَّما الصُّبحُ رقيبٌ لهُ
فيرعويso he restrains himself عندat طلوعِthe rising of الرَّقيبthe watcher
فيرعوي عند طلوعِ الرَّقيب
As though dawn were a watcher over him,
so he restrains himself at the watcher’s rising.
