حِياضَ الأَمِدّانِ الهِجانُ القَوامِحُ
So they have come to shun me, just as
So they have grown averse to me, just as
They have grown weary of me as the high-banked pools
the noble, high-headed she-camels refuse al-Amiddān’s pools.
The white, purebred camels, heads raised, refused the briny troughs.
Weary of the constant descent of the violent rains.
وأصبَحنَand they became لاnot يَسقينَنيthey give me drink منof مَوَدَّةٍaffection
وأصبَحنَ لا يَسقينَني من مَوَدَّةٍ
بَلالاًa drop of moisture ولوeven if سالَتflowed لَهُنَّfor them الأباطِحُthe gravelly valleys
بَلالاً ولو سالَت لَهُنَّ الأباطِحُ
And now they offer me no refreshing draught of affection,
And now they give me no affection to drink—
And they have ceased to give me to drink of kindliness
even if the broad watercourses flowed for them.
Not a drop, even if the gravelly valleys flowed for them.
Even a palmful, though to them belong the bursting clouds.
