أَجَدُّin earnest بَنيsons of الشَرقِيِّal-Sharqi أولعَam I lying أَنَّنيthat I
أَجَدُّ بَني الشَرقِيِّ أولعَ أَنَّني
مَتىwhenever استَجرI seek protection from جاراًa protector وَإِنand even if عَزَّhe is mighty يَغدرِhe betrays
مَتى استَجر جاراً وَإِن عَزَّ يَغدرِ
In earnest, sons of al-Sharqi, am I lying when I say:
I am the most zealous of the Easterners that I
Whenever I seek a protector, however mighty he is, he betrays me?
Whenever I make an ally of a neighbor, even an honored one, he betrays me
إِذاwhen قُلتُI say أَوفىhe kept faith أَدرَكَتهُit overtook him دَروكَةٌa fit of folly
إِذا قُلتُ أَوفى أَدرَكَتهُ دَروكَةٌ
فَياso, O مُوزعَinciter of الجيرانِthe neighbors بِالغَيِّto wrongdoing أَقصِرِdesist
فَيا مُوزعَ الجيرانِ بِالغَيِّ أَقصِرِ
When I say, 'He has kept faith,' a fit of folly overtakes him.
If I say he is loyal, deceit overtakes him
So, you who incite neighbors to wrongdoing, desist!
So O Dispenser of neighbors in malice, do spare me
