لَمّاwhen بَداhe appeared بِعارِضٍwith cheek-down
لَمّا بَدا بِعارِضٍ
عَلَيهِupon him تاجٌa crown مِنof ذَهَبgold
عَلَيهِ تاجٌ مِن ذَهَب
When he appeared amid a cloudbank,
When he appeared with down upon his cheek,
with a crown of gold upon him,
A crown of gold upon him,
عَلاhe rose عَلىabove البَدرِthe full moon سَناًin radiance
عَلا عَلى البَدرِ سَناً
فَاِنحَطّso it fell عَنهُbelow him بِرُتَبby ranks
فَاِنحَطّ عَنهُ بِرُتَب
he surpassed the full moon in radiance,
He surpassed the full moon in radiance,
and it sank rank upon rank beneath him.
So it fell several ranks below him.
