ربعَmay settle الغَمامِthe clouds عَلىover مَرابِعthe abodes of فاسِFez
ربعَ الغَمامِ عَلى مَرابِع فاسِ
دارَthe home of العُلومِthe sciences وَمَعلَمَand a place of الإِيناسِsolace
دارَ العُلومِ وَمَعلَمَ الإِيناسِ
May clouds settle over the abodes of Fez,
the home of learning and a place of solace,
ماوىthe abode of السِيادةsovereignty حَيثُwhere أَنوارُthe lights of الهُدىguidance
ماوى السِيادة حَيثُ أَنوارُ الهُدى
تُغنيobviate عَنِthe need for المَشكاةِthe lamp-niche وَالنِبراسِand the lamp
تُغني عَنِ المَشكاةِ وَالنِبراسِ
the seat of sovereignty, where the lights of guidance
obviate the need for the lamp-niche and the lamp;
حَيثُwhere اِستَقَرَّhas settled firmly المُلكُkingship يَحميguards بَيضَةَthe heart of الthe
حَيثُ اِستَقَرَّ المُلكُ يَحمي بَيضَةَ ال
إِسلامIslam مِنهُfrom it بِالنَدىwith bounty وَالباسِand valor
إِسلام مِنهُ بِالنَدى وَالباسِ
where kingship stands firm, guarding the heart of
Islam with its bounty and valor.
فَرعٌa branch نَماgrew مِنfrom هاشِمٍHashim فيin تُربَةٍsoil
فَرعٌ نَما مِن هاشِمٍ في تُربَةٍ
كانَwas الكَفِيّthe fitting match لَهاfor it مِنَamong الأَغراسِthe saplings
كانَ الكَفِيّ لَها مِنَ الأَغراسِ
A branch grew from Hashim in soil
for which it was the fitting match among the saplings,
فيat ذُروَةِthe summit of الشَرَفِhonor الَّذيwhich ماnot فَوقَهُabove it
في ذُروَةِ الشَرَفِ الَّذي ما فَوقَهُ
شَرَفٌhonor لِمُعتَبِرٍto a discerning observer يُرىis seen فيamong الناسِpeople
شَرَفٌ لِمُعتَبِرٍ يُرى في الناسِ
at the summit of honor, above which
no honor is seen among men by a discerning observer.
وَلَقَدand indeed بَعَثتُI sent مَعَwith الرَّسولthe messenger تَحيّةًa greeting
وَلَقَد بَعَثتُ مَعَ الرَّسول تَحيّةً
لِجَنابِهِto his presence مِسكيَّةmusk-scented الأَنفاسِthe breaths
لِجَنابِهِ مِسكيَّة الأَنفاسِ
And I have indeed sent with the messenger a greeting
to his noble presence, its breaths scented with musk,
لِتُذَكِّرَto remind العَهدَthe bond القَديمthe old وَإِنand even if يَكُنhe may be
لِتُذَكِّرَ العَهدَ القَديم وَإِن يَكُن
لَمnot ينسَforget مِنهُof it تَصَرُّفَthe passage of الأَحراسِthe ages
لَم ينسَ مِنهُ تَصَرُّفَ الأَحراسِ
to remind him of the old bond, although he may
not have forgotten it through the changing ages.
عَهدٌa bond كَأَيّامlike the days of الصِباyouth حَيثُwhen الصِباyouth
عَهدٌ كَأَيّام الصِبا حَيثُ الصِبا
غَضٌّfresh كَصَفوِlike the clear essence of الراحwine وَسطَwithin الكاسِthe cup
غَضٌّ كَصَفوِ الراح وَسطَ الكاسِ
A bond like the days of youth, when youth
was fresh, like the clear wine within the cup.
نَورthe blossom of العُرارةthe yellow oxeye نَورهits blossom وَنَسيمُهُand its breeze
نَور العُرارة نَوره وَنَسيمُهُ
نَشرُthe fragrance of الخُزامىlavender فيamid اِخضِرارthe greenness of الآسِmyrtle
نَشرُ الخُزامى في اِخضِرار الآسِ
Its blossom is the blossom of the yellow oxeye, and its breeze
the fragrance of lavender amid the greenness of myrtle.
