أقول أكاد اليوم أن أبلغ المدى

أقول أكاد اليوم أن أبلغ المدى

فيبعد عني ما أقول أكاد

فيبعد عني ما أقول أكاد

I say, “Today I am close to reaching the utmost limit.”

I say today I almost reach the goal

Then what I say I am close to recedes from me.

Yet what I say slips far from my control

فما لي جهاد غير أني مقصر

فما لي جهاد غير أني مقصر

وعجزي عن طول الجهاد جهاد

وعجزي عن طول الجهاد جهاد

So I have no striving except that I fall short,

My only struggle is that I fall short

And my inability to sustain long striving is itself striving.

My weakness in this lifelong effort fought

وان رجائي عودة منك بالرضا

وان رجائي عودة منك بالرضا

وإلا فحظي في المعاد بعاد

وإلا فحظي في المعاد بعاد

And indeed, my hope is that you return with favor,

And though I hope you will return pleased

And if not, my lot at the final return is separation.

If not, in the hereafter I'll be teased
