With my love I superseded the verse of passion that came before me.

And I became peerless among the people in binding and loosing.

I raised a banner on earth for the religion of love.

So the people of passion are my army, and my rule is over all.

And for every youth who loves, I am his imam,

with knowledge of noble standing, ruling justly.

And I left my reproachers on the mat of their delusion,

and I am free of any youth who heeds reproach.

And I possess knowledge of passion whose qualities are exalted

above injustice, aggression, rancor, and malice.

I became versed in the religion of love as a knower,

and whoever passion has not taught is in ignorance.

And whoever has not been lost in love's majesty

has not been guided along truth's path to excellence.

And if he gains no honor in his state and draught

through loving the one he loves, then give him tidings of abasement.

And ecstasy has noble youths, whose souls

are pure in both states, in word and deed.

And their secrets are winged in nature, bound for the heights,

stripped of all but love, O my friend.

When people give generously of wealth, you see them

lowering wealth's heads beneath the arch of the foot.

When the market of giving opens one day for their love,

they generously offer their own souls without stinginess.

And if they are entrusted with a secret, you see their breasts

as treasure-hoards whose protective wards are beyond unlocking.

And they have made, within the folds of their hearts' core,

    tombs for forms beyond conveyance.

And if threatened with abandonment, they die of fear,

and live whenever the promise of union comes to them.

    So if given a promise, they are glad, and their hearts are glad;

and if promised death, they yearn to be slain.

    By my life, they are the true lovers in my eyes;

through us the eyes' judgment stands, upheld by transmitted tradition.

Noble men who built, in love, the foundation of their wayfaring

on earnestness; the rest, in my view, stand upon frivolity.
