Welcome to this slender, ever-smiling one!
Welcome to this gentle breeze
A dream-phantom brought him to the lovesick one.
That brought to the infatuated a dream's apparition

فبيقظتيso in my wakefulness خلتI imagined الضياءthe light اماميbefore me
His radiance greeted me in the deep stirrings of slumber.
Wherein the lights of fate did swirl
So, awake, I imagined the light before me.
And in my wakefulness, illumination stood before me

Oh, if only I could be healed, afflicted and ailing,
If only grief's afflicted could be healed
Or waking hours were mingled with dreams.
Or waking life with dreams entwined

We were together, and time favored us,
We had a time that was propitious
And love, in my secluded chamber, was a guest in my tents.
When love in my intoxication was my tent's lodger

And the wine of his delicate lips was my exaltation,
While smooth wine gently down my throat did flow
Like one refreshed by vintage wine.
A vintage draft was my refreshment

And the nightingale upon the boughs is dappled;
The nightingale on branches modulated
How far apart are his passion and mine!
Far different from my love's consumed passion

We spend the morning on beds of passion, as though
On love's bedding we recline as though
We had slept, yet yearning leaves us sleepless.
Our sleep is disturbed, for yearning knows no rest

And coyness turns the gazelle, making him sway aside;
The gazelle's supple grace attracts the hunter
And indeed I have known the gazelles' turning glances.
And well I know the way of gentle turns

And I see him—ah, my yearning!—my bedmate, secluded
I see my love, while resting by my side
Within my two palms—you would say: a full moon.
Saying, as radiant as the full moon, "you are complete"

For in his nearness lies life's sweetness, and he, indeed,
His nearness makes life sweet, for he
Is, through his sweet saliva, the cure for my sickness.
With his saliva cures all my diseased state

He deliberately shoots the eye's arrows at my heart,
His eyes' arrows purposely strike my heart
And my heart carries me flying to that archer.
And make my heart take flight toward that archer

By God! Apparition of my soul's core
By my days what you poured into my imaginings?
Return to me the time you consumed in my imaginings

Our bodily existence is a jumble of dreams;
Phantoms of a dream, our beings' existence
So I watch, pondering the events of the days.
So watch, I hurl the days' events into disarray
