يصون نصوصه الزهر الكرام

Our beloved ones, keeping the covenant is a creed

Our loved ones, keeping the promise is a religion

Whose precepts the radiant, noble ones safeguard.

That protects its texts, the generous flowers.

الم يذكر لنا ود قديم

ولم تذكر ليالينا القدام

ولم تذكر ليالينا القدام

Was our old affection not remembered?

Did not the old affection remind us

And were our nights of old not recalled?

And did not our past nights remind you?

نسيتم وجدنا طيا ونشراً

ودمعا كاد يحسده الغمام

You forgot our longing, folded and unfolded,

You forgot while we found solace and joy

And tears the clouds almost envied.

لنا كالنار شب لها ضرام

Nor did thoughts of anguish cross your minds—

And no thoughts of ardent longing occurred to you

Our anguish, like a fire whose blaze has flared.

That burned in us like a fire with glowing embers.

And a lament that unleashes Noah's flood,

And crying like Noah's overflowing floods

At whose yearning sigh the doves lament.

Crying for the sorrows of my doves.

And tender verse about your qualities,

And poetry with subtle meanings

Wine gushes from its exquisite turns.

Flowing from its refinement is wine.

وعين لا ترف الى سواكم

وسمع لا يلائمه الملام

And an eye that flutters toward none but you,

And an eye that does not see but you

And an ear to which reproach is unwelcome,

And an ear that cannot stand blame.

تحكم في جوانبه الهيام

And a heart that is all yearning for you,

And a heart completely infatuated with you

Love-madness has taken command of its every corner.

Passion rules its aspects.

له في طي مضمرها نظام

And a fragrance from love of you within the heart,

And it spread in the inner self from your love

With a pattern in the folds of its hidden depths.

With an order in its hidden depths.

اما ووجوهكم انا اناس

يطيب لنا بحبكم السقام

Indeed, by your faces, we are a people

As long as your faces are people

For whom sickness, through loving you, is sweet.

Our illness is eased by loving you.

نحاضركم مع الارواح منا

ولولا ذاك ساء بنا المقام

ولولا ذاك ساء بنا المقام

We keep you company with our spirits,

We chat with you in our spirits

And but for that, our sojourn would be wretched.

And without that, staying would be unpleasant.

ونسهر من جفاكم باصطلام

وانتم في مضاجعكم نيام

And we lie sleepless, consumed by your coldness,

We stay up late, hurt by your estrangement

While you lie asleep in your beds.

نسامر وجدنا فيكم سكارى

نسامر وجدنا فيكم سكارى

ولا نطق هناك ولا كلام

ولا نطق هناك ولا كلام

Drunk, we converse by night with our longing for you,

We converse while drunk with your love

And there is neither utterance nor speech.

No speech or words are there.

الا بحياتكم يكفي التجني

فجيش الصبر بدده انهزام

Ah, by your lives, enough of unjust treatment!

Only your life is enough to pick

For defeat has scattered patience's army.

So the army of patience is defeated.

And be generous, for time has its turns,

Exist forever, for time has separation

And none but God endures forever.

And none but God has permanence.
