رشاع وعن عرش التكتم قد سقط

Unkindness unfolded openly before the people and spread.

[Perhaps: so it spread abroad], and fell from the throne of secrecy.

وطور عن الحرباء يشعر سره

وطور عن الحرباء يشعر سره

وعذر اتى سرا يؤكد ما فرط

وعذر اتى سرا يؤكد ما فرط

And a manner whose secret hints at the chameleon,

And an excuse that came secretly confirms what went before.

ومن ظن ان يمحو جلي جفائه

ومن ظن ان يمحو جلي جفائه

ومنهاجه المقضبي الى اقج الخطط

ومنهاجه المقضبي الى اقج الخطط

And whoever thinks he can erase his evident unkindness

And his course, [perhaps: leading] to the [perhaps: ugliest] schemes,

يلفظ حوى التمويه كذب ظنه

يلفظ حوى التمويه كذب ظنه

خفي اعتذار فهو في اعظم الغلط

خفي اعتذار فهو في اعظم الغلط

[Perhaps: with a phrase] that contained deception—his supposition was belied

By a hidden apology; so he is in the gravest error.
