Think this fine verse springs not from passion
I thought order's beauty not of passion
within it; rather, it is the tongue of nature.
In it, but it is nature's tongue
قلتI said أفرطتyou went too far فيin التغافلfeigned indifference عنيtoward me
وتدلستand you concealed yourself تحتbeneath ذيلthe hem الخديعهdeception
I said: You have gone too far in ignoring me,
I said you have been overly heedless of me
And hidden yourself beneath the hem of deception.
And slyly crept under the tail of deceit
رمتI sought منكfrom you القربnearness القريبclose للهفيalas for my longing
فتلقيتنيso you met me بكأسwith a cup القطيعهestrangement
I sought close nearness to you—alas for my longing!
You threw away my intimate closeness to my ardour
But you met me with the cup of estrangement.
So you met me with the cup of estrangement
فاتقso fear اللَهGod دارthe abode شخصكyour form قلبيmy heart
فأرفقنso be gentle فيهwithin it واجعلنهand make it وديعهa trust
So fear God: my heart is the abode of your form.
So fear God, turn your self towards my heart
So be gentle within it, and keep it as a trust.
And be gentle with it and make it submissive
وتحققand know for certain بأننيthat I بكin you فإنself-effaced (apparently intended: فانٍ)

And know for certain that I am effaced in you,
And realize that with you, my soul
And my soul is obedient to you as long as I live.
Is yours, obedient, as long as I live

وهيyet it واللَهby God لوif عرفتyou knew رفيعهexalted
Through longing for you, it has become lowly in nature;
In you it has become of wayward spirit and fervent love
Yet, by God, it is exalted, if only you knew.
And by God, if it knew, it is noble
فأحيهاso revive it بالقبولwith acceptance واحننand be tender عليهاtoward it
واتخذand make عندهاtoward it الجميلkindness صنيعهa favor
So revive it with acceptance, and be tender toward it.
So revive it with acceptance, and be tender towards it
And make kindness a favor bestowed upon it.
And make goodness your habit with it
