The torment of my heart in loving you is lawful to me.

Be gentle, for this harm is not lawful.

Listen, may I be your ransom: I am abased.

Will you not pity my abasement and my plight?

How long must I placate my reproachers in loving you?

And death is easier than the reproachers' gloating.

They assailed me with their rancor and grew insolent.

What have the reproachers to do with my love for you, and I with them?

From my yearning for you and my anguish, I have become

Like a phantom; and for you my shadow has grown thin.

Worn out—a brother to him [unclear wording]—with the blaze of my sigh.

And my body is thin as a worn-out toothpick.

And I concealed the pain of separation that I endure

From my closest paternal uncle's family and my maternal uncle.

And I guarded my secret in loving you and protected it.

And tears revealed it, though I did not reveal it in my words.

I wonder: will I see you rejoin me after estrangement,

And say, 'My forsaker has shown kindness through reunion,'

As the veils are torn away from you before my eyes,

In a night I shall count as many nights?

As for me, my plea is my helplessness, and that I do not know

Despite counting my breaths, how my condition will end.

So be gentle with my plight, O generous one, for I

Have made my saddled mounts kneel at the gate of your bounty.
