هجر الحب واعتدى وبغى الخب
بcompletion of 'the knave' وعزand gained honor الدنيthe base man ياalas للبوارfor ruin
ب وعز الدني يا للبوار
The beloved turned away; the knave transgressed and oppressed,
He abandoned love, transgressed, and evil triumphed,
and the base man gained honor—alas for ruin!
Oh what misery for the noble soul!
وتمادىand persisted اللئيمthe vile man طيشاrecklessly وعجتand swirled
وتمادى اللئيم طيشا وعجت
بالعزيزaround the honored one الكريمthe noble one تربdust العثارstumbling
بالعزيز الكريم ترب العثار
And the vile man persisted recklessly, and there swirled
The vile persisted recklessly in his outrage
around the honored, noble man the dust of stumbling.
Against the generous and kind, weaving intrigues.
وتعالىand grew haughty العبدthe slave الزنيمthe baseborn one واضحىand became
وتعالى العبد الزنيم واضحى
رافعاraising شأنهhis standing علىabove الاحرارthe free men
رافعا شأنه على الاحرار
And the baseborn slave grew haughty and became
The lowly slave rose up
one who raised his standing above free men.
Exalting himself over the free.
وانبرىand sprang forth صائلاassailing علىagainst الاسدthe lion الthe
وانبرى صائلا على الاسد ال
كرارever-charging ظهرmidday النهارthe day كلبdog الدارthe house
كرار ظهر النهار كلب الدار
And sprang forth, assailing the lion—
The ungrateful one attacked the lion
the ever-charging one—in broad daylight, the house-dog.
Like a rabid dog snarling in the bright daylight.
تلكthose آياتsigns ربناour Lord وستبدوand will appear
تلك آيات ربنا وستبدو
بعدafter هذاthis عجائبwonders الاقدارthe decrees of fate
بعد هذا عجائب الاقدار
Those are signs of our Lord, and there will appear
These are signs from our Lord which will be followed
after this the wonders of fate.
By even greater wonders of fate.
ربmany a وقتtime صفاwas serene لخصمfor a foe جهولdeeply ignorant
رب وقت صفا لخصم جهول
وكواهand scorched him ذاكthat الصفاءserenity بنارwith fire
وكواه ذاك الصفاء بنار
Many a time has been serene for an ignorant foe,
Lord, grant the ignorant opponent a moment of clarity
and that serenity has scorched him with fire.
Then scorch that clarity with fire!
للمعانيfor meanings فيin كلevery طيfolding ونشرand unfolding
للمعاني في كل طي ونشر
كيفhowever جاءتthey come سرa secret منamong الاسرارthe secrets
كيف جاءت سر من الاسرار
Meanings have, in every folding and unfolding,
For meanings spread in every fold and unfurl
however they come, a secret among secrets.
Like mysteries from mysteries ajar.
