Soothe the soul, and tell me of my dear friends.

And, by God, O camel-driver of the sanctuary, heal my ailment.

And bring—tenderly soothe my heart—and repeat

Their news, for separation has torn my entrails.

By your worth, bring relief to my hearing, and joyfully recite

Their praises, and revive the heart of the listening beholder.

We had nights together, our company gathered,

In a green garden with tender branches.

O how sweet those nights that passed in joy

With loved ones—how delightful those loved ones!

A people through whom the pillar of my glory rose and towered,

And through them I have shattered the pillars of my enemies.

And by their worth, after long separation they remain forever

The pupil of my eye, or what lies hidden in my heart's core.

They have indeed dwelt in my innermost self, wherever they settled,

In an inhabited dwelling or a desert's barren waste.

How often I have stretched out my hand, seeking their letters,

As the thirsty one's hand reaches out for water.

They have gone, yet their traces remain in the settlement.

So marvel, my brother, at the dead who are like the living.

From me, peace be upon them whenever there flashes

A white lightning-flash within the folds of a black cloud.
