Passing thoughts of you stir my affection,
The thoughts of you stir up my affection,
And so I have loved no beloved other than you.
And so I have loved none but you, my beloved.

They move with your secret, as you come to me by night,
You creep into my mind like your creep into my heart,
And I feel their creeping movement within my heart.
So I sense it beating in my soul.

No limb of mine is without ardent longing
My every limb has become infatuated,
That kindled in it a flame for you, O beloved.
As it has been branded by your love, O beloved.

You impart to my atoms love of you and its secret,
You give your love and secret to my atoms,
As though my limbs were created as hearts.
As if my limbs were created as hearts.

You stirred my longing, O eastern breeze;
You have stirred my passion, O morning breeze!
You blew, and my heart yearned with passion.
You have wafted while my heart is swooning with love.

You reminded me of the tenderness of a time gone by.
You reminded me of the kindness of days gone by,
Alas, how sweet the days of youth!
How good were the days of youth!

We once had, in the camp at Hajir,
We used to have, in the neighborhood,
A life—how blissful and how delightful!
A life of bliss and comfort.

فيin خدرa secluded bower اسعافfulfillment; favor منيعwell-protected الخباthe tent; shelter
Our company had gathered with our loved ones
Fate had gathered our loved ones,
In a secluded bower of fulfillment, its shelter secure.
In a garden of blooming flowers.

And Time was heedless of separating us,
While fate was heedless of parting us,
And fortune kindly filled the cups.
And fortune was kind to fill the cups.

نcompletion of 'Time' الصعبthe cruel لوif only غارتhad sunk; receded وأنand that تنضباit dry up
The eye of Time envied this serenity—
The eye of time was jealous of this serenity,
Cruel Time! Would that its eye had sunk and run dry!
Even if the difficult eye should be jealous and run dry.

ايديscattered bands; literally, hands سباهلSaba; do ...? (joined words) تدريyou know ايديscattered bands; literally, hands سباSaba
So our gathering ended in separation,
So the gathering of loved ones parted,
Like Saba's scattered bands—do you know Saba's scattered bands?
By the hands of calamities that know the hands of calamities.

By God, O east wind, speak
By God, O morning breeze, tell me,
Of the camp's neighbors and those hills.
About the neighborhood and its expanse.

In the corners of the dwelling in their camp I have
In the corners of the land, their neighborhood,
A heart tossed upon the embers of ghada wood.
Is a heart burning with sorrow.

Anguish at losing them has carried it aloft.
Missing them, grief has flown with it,
How harsh is loss, and how hard!
How harsh is the loss and how difficult!

Ah, will my days bring them to me?
Will my time bring them back to me?
How distant the dwelling, and how near!
How far is the house and how near!

In thought I cross a wilderness for them,
I cut off lines of thought about them,
And in my anguish follow it with another wilderness.
And follow it with my burning sorrow.

I weep for them in yearning, and with a sigh
I cry for them with passion, and from a moan,
The blood of my tears has dyed my whiteness red.
My blood tears whiten with grief.

I marvel that I live while they are absent;
It amazes me to remain while they are absent,
And rightly may I marvel, O Mayy.
And I have the right, O water, to be amazed.

How often I usher in the sun, sleepless over them,
How many dawns I spent awake with them,
Missing one star and seeing another.
Neglecting stars and seeing planets.

Their specter comes to me with news of them,
I say, 'Oh, welcome! Oh, welcome!'
I say, welcome, hello!

The phantom delights me, and yet—
The specter gladdens me, but it is
How often a phantom's lightning has proved deceptive!
Like a flash of specter that has become a phantom.

O people of that camp, my love for you
O people of that neighborhood, my love for you
Has become my heart's creed in love.
Has become a doctrine of love in my heart.

Alas for my yearning in your absence! By love's creed,
And my passion for you, and the religion of passion,
Whenever I sought patience from it, it refused.
I have wanted no patience from it but it refused.

Everyone distraught with love for you is despoiled;
Robbed of all by you, by God,
It is fitting that the love-distraught be despoiled.
It is right for the crazed to be robbed.

I hope He who destined our separation,
Reunite us, and may nearness be decreed.
Will unite us, and nearness will be written.

You have the right, O you who have set my mind aflame,

Scorched despite those who blamed.

You have never vanished from my sight for a blink;
You did not disappear from my sight for a moment,
Thus the Creator decreed, and there is no escape.
Thus the Creator decreed, and there is no escape.

My passion and my rapture for you suffice—
Enough are my love and infatuation with you,
At times, with my intoxication in love—as a draught.
For a time, and my drunkenness in passion is my drink.

How exalted the beloved in his seat of honor!
The beloved does not raise whom he takes by the hand,
How lowly the lover, how weary!
How abased is the lover, how tired!
