يا بني الزهراء والنور الذي
منهfrom it عيسىJesus لمعةa gleam of الفيضthe outpouring التمسsought
منه عيسى لمعة الفيض التمس
O sons of al-Zahra and of the light
O son of Zahra and the Light from which
from which Jesus sought a gleam of the outpouring;
Jesus shone with overflowing grace
وبطورand on the Mount of القربnearness ليلاًat night مذwhen بداappeared
وبطور القرب ليلاً مذ بدا
ظنthought موسىMoses أنهthat it was نارfire قبسa glowing brand
ظن موسى أنه نار قبس
and when it appeared by night on the Mount of nearness,
And at the Mount of Proximity where when
Moses thought it was fire—a glowing brand.
Moses thought it was kindled fire
لاnot يواليshows allegiance الدهرthroughout time منwhoever عادopposed أكموyou (plural; apparently split from عاداكمو)
لا يوالي الدهر من عاد أكمو
لاno ولاnor يعطيgives منof الحقthe truth نفسa breath
لا ولا يعطي من الحق نفس
Whoever opposes you never shows allegiance,
Time does not befriend those hostile
no, nor does he give so much as a breath of truth.
Nor does truth relieve the wicked
ذاكthat man ظلماًunjustly حادstrayed عنfrom نهجthe path of الرضىdivine approval
ذاك ظلماً حاد عن نهج الرضى
أنهthat he is آخرthe last of آيthe verses فيin عبس‘Abasa
أنه آخر آي في عبس
That man unjustly strayed from the path of divine approval;
That is grave injustice that left
he is the one described in the final verse of ‘Abasa.
