O gazelle who has captured your lovesick lover's heart,

Are you human—tell me—or an angel?

    جل من بالسحن فضلا جللك

    You stood revealed in dazzling beauty;

Exalted is He who graciously clothed you in comeliness.

O delicate in essence, O sweet of dusky lips,

You have been unjust, yet how upright you are in stature!

    Beauty's gleam, brilliant in radiance,

has enveloped your form in the light of grace.

Were the full moon to see you in the celestial mansion on high,

it would say, 'O young man, how beautiful you are!'

    O beloved who stole my heart, go gently;

Here is my heart, and my whole body is yours.

So be gentle with a lover distraught,

who has trodden every path in love for you.

You turned away from the path of my affection; rule as you will.

That is your right: you are beauty's celestial sphere.

    Yet virtue demands fidelity

to a lovesick one, full of longing, who has set his hopes on you.

And by Him who gave you every kind of splendor,

and favored you above the white gazelle through reason:

when your dark hair over your temples

billowed, I said, 'The sun is encircled by blackness.'

And by my life, your drowsy gaze has never

touched a youth with its sword without his perishing.

Beauty's separate charms have all come together in you.

Ah, if only my Lord had perfected you with gentleness!
