A doe owned my heart
Love's verses were recited to you by their reciter.
She recited to me verses of love after them
ومنand from لهفهاits anguish والوجدand passion والشوقand longing والهوىand love
ومن لهفها والوجد والشوق والهوى
كواهاscorched it النوىdistance والهجرand estrangement أرخصcheapened غاليهاwhat was dear to it
كواها النوى والهجر أرخص غاليها
And from its anguish, passion, longing, and love,
And from her yearning, ecstasy, fervor and passion
Distance scorched it, and estrangement cheapened what was dear to it.
Her determination and separation were the cheapest things to her
مضتit departed أرباًin pieces منfrom سفحslope جوفيmy interior كأنهاas though it were
مضت أرباً من سفح جوفي كأنها
مدينةa city قومa people أصلهاits foundation صارbecame عاليهاits top
مدينة قوم أصلها صار عاليها
It departed in pieces from the slope within me, as though it were
She passed by the slope of my bosom as if she was
A people's city, whose foundation had become its top.
A city whose origins became high
وفرقهاand scattered it جيشarmy الفراقseparation فشابهتso it resembled
وفرقها جيش الفراق فشابهت
عصابةa band جندsoldiers خالفتdisobeyed أمرcommand واليهاits governor
عصابة جند خالفت أمر واليها
And the army of separation scattered it, so it resembled
And the army of separation dispersed her so she resembled
A band of soldiers that disobeyed its governor's command.
