O brother of tender affection, how can you be so patient with us?

هلdid...? لطيشout of recklessness جعلتyou made قلبكyour heart صخراa rock
هل لطيش جعلت قلبك صخرا
امor تعمدتyou deliberately intended اخذكyour taking القلبthe heart مناfrom us
ام تعمدت اخذك القلب منا
Did you make your heart a rock out of recklessness,
Has reckless impulse made your heart into stone?
or did you deliberately take the heart from us?
Or did you intentionally take your heart from us?
انif تكنyou are عنfrom ابصارناour sight غبتyou vanished شخصاin person
ان تكن عن ابصارنا غبت شخصا
فبمعناكyet in your essence قطever ماnot غبتyou were absent عناfrom us
فبمعناك قط ما غبت عنا
If you have vanished in person from our sight,
If you've been absent from our sight in person,
yet in your essence you have never been absent from us.
In spirit you have never been absent from us.
ماnot رأىsaw طرفناour gaze سواكanyone but you بآنat any moment
ما رأى طرفنا سواك بآن
واخوand the brother of الحبlove عنfrom سوىanything other than الحبlove يفنىis effaced
واخو الحب عن سوى الحب يفنى
Not for a moment has our gaze seen anyone but you,
Our eyes have seen none but you at any time,
and love's brother is lost to all but love.
And a brotherly love, none but love can destroy.
ماnot ضحكناwe laughed منذsince افتقدناكwe missed you حزناout of sorrow
ما ضحكنا منذ افتقدناك حزنا
فاقدone bereft of القلبthe heart كيفhow يضحكhe laughs سناa tooth
فاقد القلب كيف يضحك سنا
We have not laughed since we felt your absence, out of sorrow.
We have not laughed in our sorrow since we missed you -
How can one bereft of his heart show his teeth in laughter?
How can the heart laugh when deprived of joy?
نتثنىwe writhe علىupon لظىthe blaze of البعدseparation لهفاin anguished longing
نتثنى على لظى البعد لهفا
مثلماjust as انتyou رقةdelicately تتثنىyou sway
مثلما انت رقة تتثنى
We writhe in longing upon the blaze of separation,
We languish from the agony of your absence,
just as you sway with delicate grace.
As tenderly as you used to languish.
لوif only تراناyou see us نبكيwe weep عليكfor you واناand indeed we
لو ترانا نبكي عليك وانا
غيرother than لقياكmeeting you نحنwe لاdo not نتمنىwish for
غير لقياك نحن لا نتمنى
If only you could see us weeping for you; indeed,
If you could see us crying for you while
we wish for nothing but to meet you.
We wish for nothing except to meet you.
