اخا الرأي دع هذا الزمان واهله

اخا الرأي دع هذا الزمان واهله

وودعه لا ترمق بعينك كله

وودعه لا ترمق بعينك كله

O brother of sound judgment, leave this age and its people.

O brother of opinion, leave this time and its people

And bid it farewell; do not gaze upon it all with your eye.

And bid it farewell, do not glance at it whole

ولا تقطعن من مسقط الرأس حبله

ولا تقطعن من مسقط الرأس حبله

إذا اغترب الحر الكريم بدت له

إذا اغترب الحر الكريم بدت له

And never sever the bond with your birthplace.

And do not sever the rope from the place of birth

When a free and noble man goes abroad, there appear to him—

If the free honorable man becomes an expatriate, ways will appear to him

يشتت منهن اكتئابا يقينه

يشتت منهن اكتئابا يقينه

اذا لم يثبته ويحفظه دينه

اذا لم يثبته ويحفظه دينه

His certainty is shattered by sorrow from them,

That will scatter depression, spoiling his certainty

if his faith does not steady him and protect him.

If his religion does not make him steadfast and preserve him

فهاهن والله العظيم يعينه

فهاهن والله العظيم يعينه

تفرق احباب ونذل يهينه

تفرق احباب ونذل يهينه

So here they are—and God Almighty helps him—

Friends are dispersed, and the ignoble demean him

Parting from loved ones, and a scoundrel who humiliates him;

And if he dies, none will rend their garments for him

وان مات لم يشقق عليه ثياب

وان مات لم يشقق عليه ثياب

and if he dies, no garments are torn in mourning for him.
