طال في خلوة الذنوب انفرادي

وكوت جلوة الغرور فؤادي

My solitude in the seclusion of sins has lasted long.

And the splendor of delusion has seared my heart.

كم أنادي واجب أن أنادي

ما لعبد عدت عليه الأعادي

How often I call out—it is my duty to call out.

What is left for a servant whom enemies have assailed

بانتقاد وذنبه بازدياد

تبع النفس في جميع القضايا

With reproach, while his sin keeps increasing?

He followed the lower self in every affair,

ورآها للسير أقوى المطايا

فمضى وهو غافل للبلايا

And deemed it the strongest mount for the journey.

So he went on, heedless of calamities,

وطريح على فراش الخطايا

وبعيد عن أهله والبلاد

Lying helpless on the bed of sins,

And far from his family and homeland.

برقع الوهم بالعيوب طواه

وعن المنهج القويم لواه

The veil of illusion enfolded him in faults,

And turned him from the upright path.

ذاب في دائه وعز دوائه

وأسير لميله وهواه

He wasted away in his illness, and his cure was hard to find,

A captive to his inclination and desire,

ولجهل يهيم في كل وادي

ترك الحق والصواب وراه

And through ignorance he wanders in every valley.

He left truth and right behind him,

وغدا في ضلاله مسراه

فتراه من سوء فرط غواه

And his path came to lie in his error.

So you see him, from the evil of his excessive waywardness,

ناكس الرأس خيفة من خطاه

ومساويه وهو صفر الأيادي

Head bowed, fearing his missteps

And his misdeeds, while his hands are empty.

غاب عن أمره بنشر وطي

وقضى العمر بين قيس وطي

He lost sight of his affairs amid unfolding and folding,

And spent his life between Qays and Tayy.

ميت باطناً بظاهر حي

وضعيف بسعي بزعم قوي

Dead within, though outwardly alive,

Weak in striving, though strong by his own claim,

طارق للطريق من غير زاد

سود الدفتر الخفي ودجى

A traveler on the road without provisions.

He blackened the hidden ledger and darkened

صحفه ثم راح بطلب منجا

ألهذا نيل المآرب يرجى

Its pages, then went in search of deliverance.

Can such a man hope for the fulfillment of desires?

ما لذاك المسيء واللَه ملجا

بحياة ويوم هول التنادي

By God, that wrongdoer has no refuge,

In life or on the dread Day of Calling,

ونصير في حال دنيا وأخرى

وظهير في الأمر سراً وجهرا

Nor a helper in this world or the next,

Nor a supporter in his affairs, secretly or openly,

ومغيث حيث الدفاتر تقرى

غير طاه تاج النبيين طرا

Nor a rescuer where the ledgers are read,

Other than Taha, crown of all the prophets,

وإمام الجميع في كل نادي

غيث بر من المكارم هامي

And leader of all in every gathering.

A rain of goodness, pouring down from noble virtues,

وغياث في يوم كرب الحزام

كوكب الأنبياء سامي المقام

And succor on the day of the belt's tightening,

The star of the prophets, exalted in station,

كعبة الأمن للخوف وحامي

ظهر لاج عدت عليه العوادي

The Kaaba of safety against fear, and protector

Of the back of a refuge-seeker whom calamities have assailed.

نعم مولى يحمي الدخيل من الذل

وكريماً مهما أردت به قل

Excellent is the patron who protects the refuge-seeker from humiliation!

And generous—say of him whatever you wish!

أشرف الخلق خيرهم سيد الكل

صاحب التاج والبراق رئيس ال

The noblest of creation, their best, master of all,

Possessor of the crown and Buraq, chief of the

مرسلين العظام سمح الأيادي

أصل سر لذات شكل الأنام

Great messengers, generous of hand.

The root of the mystery of humankind's essential form,

وشراع لنشرة الأيام

غاية الانتها لكل ختام

And a sail for the unfolding of the days,

The utmost end of every conclusion,

ألف الابتدا بكل مقام

نقطة السر عن ختم المبادي

The alif of the beginning at every station,

The point of mystery concerning the sealing of beginnings,

هيكل الجمع عند فرق المعاني

دورة الفرق سر حرز الأمان

The temple of union amid the separation of meanings,

The cycle of separation, the secret of the refuge of safety,

سيد موصل لأقصى الأماني

سبب الكائنات قاص وادان

A master leading to the furthest reaches of hope,

The cause of beings, far and near,

رحمة للجميع صاد وغادي

شرعة اللَه فيه باللَه قامت

A mercy to all, the thirsty and those setting out at dawn.

God's law stood established in him, through God,

وبه عصبة الرشاد استقامت

منة في الوجود عمت ودامت

And through him the company of right guidance stood upright.

A favor that spread throughout existence and endured,

نعمة للورى نمت وتسامت

باب وصل لنيل كل مراد

A blessing for humankind that grew and rose high,

A gate of union for attaining every desire.

حرم الأمن يوم خوف البرايا

حين حقا تغدو النوايا مطايا

The sanctuary of safety on the day of creation's fear,

When intentions truly become mounts,

مأمل الناس عند كشف الخفايا

ملجأ العاجزين بحر العطايا

The hope of people when hidden things are revealed,

The refuge of the helpless, the ocean of gifts,

بحر جود طمى على القصاد

وهب السر من بصير سميع

An ocean of generosity overflowing upon those who seek him.

He was granted the mystery by the All-Seeing, All-Hearing,

وأتى هادياً وخير شفيع

فك لما انجلى لنا بربيع

And came as a guide and the best intercessor.

When he appeared to us in spring, he unlocked

كنز غيب مطلسم ببديع

من شؤون الرحمن لا الإرصاد

A treasure of the unseen, talisman-bound by a marvel

Of the All-Merciful's workings, not by watchful guarding.

فجاد الهدى بعزم قوي

وأباد العدا بحزم علي

Then he lavished guidance with mighty resolve,

And vanquished the enemies with lofty determination.

فهو مضمون كل شأن جلي

وهو مفتاح كل باب خفي

Thus he is the substance of every manifest affair,

And he is the key to every hidden door,

وهو للكل حجة الاستناد

علم طائل على الأعلام

And for all he is the warrant for reliance,

A banner towering over all banners,

وإمام الهدى لكل إمام

And the leader of guidance for every leader.
