    My heart is stung, and you—you are its healer.

    Rather, you, O sweet one with dusky lips, are my antidote.

    بك عن سواك يذوب بالاشواق

    By your life, the wounded heart is love-distraught;

    For you alone it melts with longing.

    شمخت وانت الى ذراها الراقي

    Within it, yours is a station of great esteem;

    Lofty it stands, and you climb to its heights.

    لك يا حبيبي حضرة الاطلاق

    I bound it to you, for you fill it entirely;

    Yours, my beloved, is the realm of the unbounded.

    O you who shun me though I am blameless—has not

    The burning ember drawn your gaze toward me?

    You have gone too far in unjust torment, so there is no

    Mercy in you, even for a moment, for lovers.

    O night, I have patiently endured your length, sleepless,

    And my tears flow from the corners of my eyes.

    And those departing traveled by night; their caravan is borne

    Through the desert's trackless wastes by white she-camels.

    They trod the road, and after them my tears

    Sprinkled the road's broad passes for wayfarers.

    They took my heart, and amid their baggage it lies

    A hostage, and they have melted away the rest of me.

    And a little gazelle in the caravan kindled my anguish,

    With his delicate, radiant smile.

    How often he kept laughing when he saw me weeping,

    While the plain was sprinkled with my shimmering tears.

    And how often I told him of my lovesick passion

    For him—and he found my enslavement sweet.

    I made him master of my bondage; he went too far in hurting me,

    And laid waste the eminence of my lofty merit.

    He claimed eminence through beauty, yet only

    Noble character is the honor of perfection.
