خيال حبيبي لم يزل ضمن خاطري
وانand though بعدتare distant منهfrom him الديارthe dwellings قريباnear
وان بعدت منه الديار قريبا
My beloved's image ever remains within my thoughts,
The image of my beloved still lingers in my mind
near, though the dwellings lie far from him.
Though the homelands have distanced me from him
يناجيهcommunes with him سريmy innermost self حاضراpresent وهوwhile he is غائبabsent
يناجيه سري حاضرا وهو غائب
اشمتhave you beheld? حضوراa presence ياO هذيمHudhaym مغيباhidden from sight
اشمت حضورا يا هذيم مغيبا
My innermost self communes with him, present though he is absent.
My innermost self whispers to him though he is absent
Have you beheld, O Hudhaym, a presence hidden from sight?
I sensed his presence disappearing, O this passing world
لقدindeed جمعhas united الاضدادopposites فهوso he وحقهby his worth
لقد جمع الاضداد فهو وحقه
غداhas become ممرضاcausing sickness ليto me فيin الهوىlove وطبيباand a physician
غدا ممرضا لي في الهوى وطبيبا
He has indeed united opposites; so, by his worth, he
He gathered opposites, so he is, by rights
has become, in love, both the one who sickens me and my physician.
At times a healer of my love, at times its sickness
احاضرهI converse with him فكراin thought وإنيand indeed I لأجلهfor his sake
احاضره فكرا وإني لأجله
الجلجI set trembling دمعاtears فيon الخدودthe cheeks سكيباstreaming
الجلج دمعا في الخدود سكيبا
I converse with him in thought; and indeed, for his sake I
I think of him constantly, and for his sake
set tears trembling as they stream down my cheeks.
Tears flow freely down my cheeks
وماand not اختارhas chosen قلبيmy heart بعدهafter him وحياتهby his life
وما اختار قلبي بعده وحياته
منfrom among الناسthe people فيin هذاthis الوجودexistence حبيباa beloved
من الناس في هذا الوجود حبيبا
And, by his life, after him my heart has not chosen
After him and his life, my heart chose no one
a beloved from among the people of this world.
As a beloved in this whole existence
وقيلand it was said عجيبstrange كمhow often ترددrecurs ذكرهmention of him
وقيل عجيب كم تردد ذكره
وانand if طرفةan eye-blink انساهI forget him كانwould be عجيباstrange
وان طرفة انساه كان عجيبا
And it was said: 'Strange, how often mention of him recurs!'
And it's said, how strange - his name still echoes
Yet if I forgot him for an eye-blink, that would be strange.
If for a moment I forgot him, that would be strange
غريبrare جمالbeauty منthe one whom عشقتI have loved واننيand indeed I
غريب جمال من عشقت وانني
بهthrough him صرتI have become بينamong العالمينall people غريباa stranger
به صرت بين العالمين غريبا
Rare is the beauty of the one I love; and indeed I
Wondrous is the beauty of the one I loved, and I
through him have become a stranger among all people.
For him, have become a stranger in both worlds
