أَناI مَنthe one whom تَسمَعُyou hear عَنهُof him وَتَرىand you see
لاdo not تُكَذِّبdisbelieve عَنabout غَراميmy passion خَبَراa report
I am the one you hear of and see.
I am the one whom you hear of and see
Do not disbelieve any report of my passion.
Do not deny the news of my passion
ليI have حَبيبٌa beloved كَمَلتhave become perfect أَوصافُهُhis qualities
حُقَّit is fitting ليfor me فيin حُبِّهِloving him أَنthat أُعذَراI be excused
I have a beloved whose qualities are perfect.
I have a lover whose attributes are perfect
I deserve to be excused for loving him.
I have a right in his love to make excuses
حينَwhen أَضحىbecame حُسنُهُhis beauty مُشتَهِراrenowned
رُحتُI became فيin الوَجدِpassionate longing بِهِfor him مُشتَهِراrenowned
When his beauty became renowned,
When his beauty became well known
I became renowned for my passionate longing for him.
I went out well known in passion for him
كُلُّevery شَيءٍthing مِنof حَبيبيmy beloved حَسَنٌbeautiful
لاnot أَرىI see مِثلَthe like of حَبيبيmy beloved فيamong الوَرىhumankind
Everything about my beloved is beautiful.
Everything about my lover is beautiful
I see no one like my beloved among humankind.
I do not see any like my lover in all creation
أَحوَرٌdark-eyed with bright whites أَصبَحتُI have become فيهِover him حائِراًbewildered
I have become by evening فيهِon his account سَمَراnight-time talk
Dark-eyed is he; I have grown bewildered by him.
Dazed I have become in him
Brown-skinned is he; on his account I have become a tale told at night.
Dark I have become in longing for him
بَعضُpart of ماwhat أَلقاهُI endure it مِنهُfrom him أَنَّهُthat he
لاdoes not يَزالُcease الدَهرَever بيwith me مُستَهتِراtrifling
Part of what I suffer from him is that he
Some of what his glances cast on me
Keeps forever trifling with me.
He continues forever to make me infatuated
فَتَرانيso you see me باكِياًweeping مُكتَئِباًdejected
وَتَراهُand you see him ضاحِكاًlaughing مُستَبشِراrejoicing
So you see me weeping and dejected,
So you see me crying, depressed
And you see him laughing and rejoicing.
And you see him laughing, delighted
إِنَّindeed لَيلاًa night قَدhas دَجاgrown dark مِنfrom شَعرِهِhis hair
فيهِin it ماhow أَحلىsweet الضَنىwasting illness وَالسَهَراand sleeplessness
Indeed, a night has grown dark from his hair;
For at night his hair spreads
Within it, how sweet are wasting sickness and sleeplessness!
In which is the sweetest distress and vigil
وَصَباحاًand a morning قَدhas بَداappeared مِنfrom وَجهِهِhis face
حَيَّرَbewildered الأَلبابَminds لَمّاwhen أَسفَراit shone forth
And a dawn has emerged from his face,
And in the morning his face appears
Bewildering minds when it shone forth.
Dazzling minds when it dawns
وَاِفتِضاحيand my disgrace فيهِon his account ماhow أَطيَبَهُsweet it is
كانَhappened ماwhat كانَhappened وَيَدريand knows مَنwhoever دَرىknew
And my disgrace on his account—how sweet it is!
And my infatuation in him - how sweet it is
What happened happened; whoever knows, knows.
What happened has happened, and those who know, know
أَيُّهاO you الواشونَtalebearers ماhow أَغفَلَكُمheedless you are
لَوif only عَلِمتُمyou knew ماwhat جَرىhappened ليto me وَجَرىand happened
O talebearers, how heedless you are!
O busybodies, how unaware you are
If only you knew what befell me, time and again!
If you knew what has happened to me
وَأَذَعتُمand you spread عَنabout فُؤاديmy heart سَلوَةًforgetfulness of love
إِنَّindeed هَذاthis لَحَديثٌsurely a tale مُفتَرىfabricated
And you spread word that my heart has forgotten its love;
And you gave relief to my heart
This is indeed a fabricated tale.
This would be an invented tale
بَينَbetween قَلبيmy heart وَسُلُوّيand my forgetting فيin الهَوىlove
مِثلُthe like of ماwhat بَينَbetween الثُرَيّاthe Pleiades وَالثَرىand the dust
Between my heart and my ceasing to love
Between my heart and its relief in love
Lies a gulf like that between the Pleiades and the dust.
Is like what lies between al-Thurayya and the ground
