منع الوصال ولج بالهجر

وأطال تعذيبي به بدري

He denied union and persisted in estrangement,

And my full moon prolonged my torment through it.

واضر جسمي بالبعاد وقد

نحل الوجود وخانني صبري

And he harmed my body through separation; indeed,

My being has wasted away, and my patience has betrayed me.

آذى قواي وها اذيته

تسري له من حيث لا يدري

He hurt my strength; behold, the harm he caused

Reaches him from a source he does not know.

قسما بآي الذكر ثم بما

في الذكر من قسم لذي حجر

I swear by the verses of the Remembrance, then by whatever

Oath the Remembrance holds for one endowed with reason:

انا لا احب سواه كيف عدا

ابدا ولا اسلوه في عمري

I love none but him, however he wrongs me,

Ever; nor shall I cease loving him throughout my life.

وغرامه في القلب مستتر

حتى اصير وديعة القبر

And my passion for him lies hidden in my heart,

Until I become the grave's entrusted charge.

كم ملت عنه بظاهري وله

مني عظيم الوجد في سري

How often I turned from him outwardly, while for him

I held immense longing in my secret heart.

وتركته لفظا ولي ابدا

قلب يقلبه على الجمر

And I left him in words, yet I always have

A heart he turns over upon the embers.

ان المحبة في الفؤاد لها

دمع المحب مسلسلا يجري

Indeed, love within the heart has

The lover's tears flowing in an unbroken chain.

لكن نظام العقل يلزم ان

جهرا يجازى الهجر بالهجر

But reason's rule requires that

Openly, estrangement be repaid with estrangement.
