أَهاجَكَhas it stirred you? رَبعٌa dwelling-site عَفاhas faded مُخلِقُtimeworn
نَعَمyes فَفُؤادِيَfor my heart مُستَعلِقُclinging
Has a faded, timeworn dwelling-site stirred you?
A gentle breeze stirred longing in my heart
Yes, for my heart clings
Yes, so my heart clings on
لِذِكرَةِto the memory of مَنone who قَدalready نَأَتhas grown distant دارُهُhis home
فَقَلبِيَso my heart فيin رَهنِهِhis keeping as a pledge موثَقُbound fast
to the memory of one whose home has grown distant;
To the memory of one whose home is now far off
so my heart is bound fast, held in pledge by that one.
My heart is held ransom, fettered fast
يُذَكِّرُنيreminds me الدَهرَthroughout time ماwhat قَدhas already مَضىpassed
مِنَof العَيشِlife فَالعَينُand so the eye تَغرَورِقُbrims with tears
It ever reminds me of what has passed
Time reminds me of days gone by
of life, and my eye brims with tears:
Of life once lived, and tears flood my eyes
لَيالِيَnights when أَهليmy family وَأَهلُand the family of الَّتيher who
دُموعيmy tears بِذِكراهُمُat their memory تَسبِقُrace forth
the nights when my family and hers—
Nights with my family and with hers
my tears race forth at their memory—
My tears outpacing memories of them
خَليطانِtwo close companions مَحضَرُناour gathering-place واحِدٌone
فَحَبلُso the cord of المَوَدَّةِaffection لاnot يَخلَقُwears out
were close companions, sharing one gathering-place;
Our gatherings were one and the same
so the cord of affection does not wear out.
Bonds of affection firmly tied
لَناfor us وَلِهِندٍand for Hind بِجَنبِbeside الغَميal-Ghami- (beginning of al-Ghamim)
مِ-m (completes al-Ghamim) مَبدىًa desert camp وَمَنزِلُناand our dwelling مُؤنِقُdelightful
For us and for Hind, beside al-Ghamim,
For us and for India, despite sorrow
was a desert camp, and our dwelling was delightful.
Exile was our fate, our home forlorn
فَإِنso if يَكُis ذاكَthat الزَمانُtime اِنقَضىhas ended
فَحَبلُكَthen your cord مِنfrom حَبلِهاher cord مُطلَقُloosed
So if that time has ended,
If that time has indeed passed away
then your cord is loosed from hers.
Your bond with her will come undone
فَقَدfor indeed عِشتُI lived فيin ماwhat مَضىhas passed لاهِياًtaking pleasure
بِهاin her وَالوِصالُand union بِناto us يَعلَقُclings
For in bygone days I lived, taking pleasure
For I lived before absorbed in her
in her, while union held us fast.
And union with us did hang upon
