على الغر اصحاب النهى اصعب الغصص
From the passing days, O Umm ʿĀmir, there came one after another
The days have brought in succession, O Umm Amir,
upon the noble men of discernment the hardest griefs to swallow.
the harshest choking griefs upon the noble men of reason.
فكلfor every اللياليthe nights للاسافلfor the base فرصةan opportunity
فكل الليالي للاسافل فرصة
وتقضىand spend their lives اساطينpillars of العلاeminence ترقبawaiting الفرصopportunities
وتقضى اساطين العلا ترقب الفرص
For every night affords the lowly an opportunity,
For every night offers the base an opportunity,
while the pillars of eminence perish awaiting their chance.
while the pillars of eminence spend their lives awaiting chances.
فياso, O عجباwonder هلdoes? يبذلbestows الدهرTime حصةa share
فيا عجبا هل يبذل الدهر حصة
لهمto them مثلماjust as للجربto the mangy احسنhas been generous بالحصصwith shares
لهم مثلما للجرب احسن بالحصص
How astonishing! Does Fate allot a share
So, how strange! Does Time bestow a share
to them as it does to the mangy? How fine these allotments are!
on them, as it has generously granted shares to the mangy?
تحاربهمwage war on them أيامهمtheir days بعجائبwith wonders
تحاربهم أيامهم بعجائب
طوتenfolded منof فنونarts of الغدرtreachery مستغربstrange القصصtales
طوت من فنون الغدر مستغرب القصص
Their own days wage war upon them with astonishing events
Their days wage war on them with wonders
containing, among treachery’s arts, the strangest of tales.
that enfold strange tales of the arts of treachery.
اجلyes حظfortune اصحابpossessors of الكمالاتexcellences نائمasleep
اجل حظ اصحاب الكمالات نائم
وهاand behold هوit حظfortune الاسفلينthe base لقدindeed رقصhas danced
وها هو حظ الاسفلين لقد رقص
Indeed, the fortune of those endowed with perfection lies asleep,
Yes, the fortune of those endowed with excellence is asleep,
while behold—the fortune of the lowly has begun to dance.
and behold—the fortune of the base has indeed danced!
واهلand the people of العلاeminence فيin مطلقunbounded الفضلvirtue فتيةyoung men
واهل العلا في مطلق الفضل فتية
معذبةtormented الافكارthoughts كالطيرlike birds فيin القفصthe cage
معذبة الافكار كالطير في القفص
Yet the people of eminence, in unalloyed virtue, are young men
And the people of eminence are youths of unbounded virtue,
whose thoughts are tormented like birds within a cage.

وانand indeed ابتلاءthe testing of المؤمنينthe believers محققcertain
وان ابتلاء المؤمنين محقق
بهconcerning it قدalready اتاناhas come to us النصthe text فيin احسنthe best of القصصtales
به قد اتانا النص في احسن القصص
And indeed, the testing of believers is assured;
And indeed, the testing of believers is certain:
the revealed Text has told us of it in “the finest of tales.”
the text has already come to us concerning it in the best of tales.
