From the land of Ḥājir, the breeze brought us
The breeze brought to us from a rocky land
Tidings and news upon our eyes.
News and tidings over the rocks
هزswayed الغصونthe boughs كهاتيكlike those القدودthe bodily figures ومنand from
هز الغصون كهاتيك القدود ومن
عطرthe fragrance of الخدودthe cheeks اتاناcame to us وهوand it was معطارrichly scented
عطر الخدود اتانا وهو معطار
It swayed the boughs like those figures, and from
It shook the branches like swaying flames, and
The fragrance of cheeks it came to us, richly scented.
Brought us a fragrance from cheeks that were perfumed
آهah! علىfor قربnearness هاتيكthose الديارthe abodes وياand oh
آه على قرب هاتيك الديار ويا
لهفاهwhat anguish! شطتgrew distant بناwith us عنfrom اهلهاtheir people الدارthe dwelling
لهفاه شطت بنا عن اهلها الدار
Ah, for the nearness of those abodes! And oh,
Oh how near are those dwellings, yet
What anguish! Our dwelling has carried us far from their people.
Yearning has carried us far from that home
نبكيwe weep لهمfor them وكأنand as though الدمعthe tears حينwhen جرىflowed
نبكي لهم وكأن الدمع حين جرى
مناfrom us جرىflowed منهfrom it يومthe day of البينparting امطارrains
منا جرى منه يوم البين امطار
We weep for them, as though the tears, when they flowed
We weep for them, as if when our tears flowed
From us, poured forth rain on the day of parting.
They flowed from them on the day we parted
ياah! ربmany a وقتmoment ينيرillumines اللطفgrace ظلمتهits darkness
يا رب وقت ينير اللطف ظلمته
فالعتمso the darkness يزهروblooms, and الغيابthe absent ones حضارpresent ones
فالعتم يزهرو الغياب حضار
Ah, many a moment whose darkness grace illumines—
O Lord, a time when kindness will light up its darkness
Then darkness blossoms, and the absent are present.
So gloom may flower and absence turn to presence
