وبالعفة المحض الغزال المهفهفا
For God's sake I loved, in secrecy and purity,
With chaste and candid love God's face I sought,
and with pure chastity, the slender gazelle.
Like startled fawn in verdant glade distraught.

فملا درى حالي نفى قلة الوفا
And I treated him with sincerity in every circumstance.
To Him in truth I gave my plighted troth;
So when he knew my state, he denied any lack of fidelity.
How could He deem I failed in deed or thought?

على حسن حال حسبنا ربنا كفى
And each of us came to know his beloved's worth.
We both discerned the other's precious worth;
In a good state, our Lord is enough for us—He suffices.
To bless our state, God's grace sufficed us both.
