شيب الكريم اضر أمّ عويمر
ولكمand how often بعزمwith resolve شقhe rent سترthe veil of ظلامdarkness
ولكم بعزم شق ستر ظلام
The noble man’s graying distressed Umm ʿUwaymir,
The noble man's gray hair distressed Umm Uwaymir,
though many a veil of darkness he tore through with resolve.
And how often, with resolve, he rent the veil of darkness!
ماnot راعهalarmed him زمنthe age of المشيبgraying وانماbut rather
ما راعه زمن المشيب وانما
قدindeed شيبتهturned him gray حوادثthe misfortunes of الايامthe days
قد شيبته حوادث الايام
It was not the age of graying that alarmed him; rather,
The age of graying did not alarm him; rather,
the vicissitudes of the days had turned him gray.
The misfortunes of time had turned him gray.
وامرand the bitterest ماwhat يجدencounters الكريمthe noble man منof العناsuffering
وامر ما يجد الكريم من العنا
انthat يبتليهafflicts him زمانهhis times بلئامwith base men
ان يبتليه زمانه بلئام
And the bitterest hardship a noble man can know
And the bitterest suffering the noble man encounters
is for his times to afflict him with ignoble men.
Is for his times to afflict him with base men.
