وانكand indeed you are عاذلreproachful حيناat times وباشand smiling
You offer me counsel sincerely, O my reproacher;
You offer me sincere counsel, O my reproacher,
though at times you reproach, and at times are pleasant.
and indeed you are sometimes reproachful, sometimes smiling.
وليand I have قلبa heart بحبيfor my beloved ذاthis ولوهdistraught with love
وفكرand a mind فيin الهوىlove رهنcaptive to اندهاشbewilderment
And I have a heart that, in my love, is possessed by rapture,
And I have a heart distraught for this beloved of mine,
and a mind held captive in passion to bewilderment.
and a mind held captive by bewilderment in love.
فلوthen if حلhe settled العراقIraq وقيلand it were said زرهvisit him
لطرتI would surely fly اليهto him لاnot كمسيرlike the journey of ماشa walker
Were he to settle in Iraq and I were told, “Visit him,”
Were he to settle in Iraq, and I were told, "Visit him,"
I would fly to him, not journey at a walker’s pace.
I would fly to him, not go at a walker's pace.
هواهlove for him اقرhas lodged فيin كليall of me سقاميmy sickness
وماand not اناI كالسقيمlike an invalid علىon الفراشthe bed
Love for him has made my sickness settle through my whole being,
Love for him has lodged my sickness in every part of me,
yet I am not like a sick man lying upon a bed.
yet I am not like an invalid lying in bed.
لقدindeed رقتhave grown thin بهbecause of him اجزاءparts جسميof my body
كماjust as رقتhave grown fine لهfor him تلكthose الحواشيthe fringes
Indeed, because of him, the parts of my body have grown thin,
Indeed, every part of my body has grown thin because of him,
as, for his sake, have those extremities.
just as those fringes have grown fine for him.
اشبI blaze بنارهwith his fire واليهand toward him اسعىI hasten
احاولهI seek him محاولةwith the striving of الفراشthe moth
I blaze in his fire and hasten toward him;
I blaze with his fire and hasten toward him;
I seek him as the moth seeks the flame.
I seek him as a moth seeks the flame.
فيبصرنيso he sees me الخليthe carefree one صحيحsound جسمin body
لقدindeed غشتهhas veiled it لامعةthe sheen القماشof cloth
Thus one untouched by love sees me sound in body—
So the carefree man sees me sound in body;
the sheen of the cloth has surely deceived him.
indeed, the sheen of cloth has veiled it.
