لريم ذاك الخبا
And my desire turned
toward the gazelle of that tent.
ياO ساكناdweller in مهجتيmy heart's core
يا ساكنا مهجتي
صبرتهاyou made it (apparently intended) كالهباlike dust
صبرتها كالهبا
O dweller in my heart's core,
you have made it like dust.
رفقاًbe gentle بذيwith one possessed of لوعةburning anguish
رفقاً بذي لوعة
رأىregarded الهوىlove مذهباas a creed
رأى الهوى مذهبا
Be gentle with one in burning anguish,
who took love as his creed.
لاجلfor the sake of خديكyour two cheeks قدmay
لاجل خديك قد
يعشقone loves وردthe roses الربىof the hills
يعشق ورد الربى
For your cheeks' sake, one may
love the roses of the hills.
ياO أهيفاslender-waisted one وجههhis face
يا أهيفا وجهه
مستطلعrising كوكباas a star
مستطلع كوكبا
O slender-waisted one, whose face
rises as a star,
وطرفهand his glance سيفهhis sword
وطرفه سيفه
للفتكfor slaying ماضيkeen الشباthe cutting edges
للفتك ماضي الشبا
and whose glance is his sword,
keen-edged for the kill.
وعذبand a sweet one ذابmelted اللمىthe lips' dusky hue
وعذب ذاب اللمى
مضناهhis languishing lover كمhow often عذباhe tormented
مضناه كم عذبا
And a sweet one, with melting, dusky lips—
how often he tormented his languishing lover!
وقدهand his figure كمhow many وكمand how many
وقده كم وكم
عقلa mind محبof a lover سباtook captive
عقل محب سبا
And his figure—how many, how many
lovers' minds has it taken captive!
قلبيmy heart ولوهاdistraught with love بهfor him
قلبي ولوها به
علىupon الغضاghada-wood embers قلباwas turned over
على الغضا قلبا
My heart, distraught with love for him,
was turned over on ghada embers.
والهفتيalas, my anguish لمdid not ارمI seek
والهفتي لم ارم
لقياهmeeting him الاexcept that ابيhe refused
لقياه الا ابي
Alas, my anguish! Never did I seek
to meet him but he refused.
فيin سوحthe open fields وجديmy longing لهfor him
في سوح وجدي له
جوادthe steed صبريof my patience كباstumbled
جواد صبري كبا
In the fields of my longing for him,
the steed of my patience stumbled.
ابعدنيhe drove me away قالياhating me
ابعدني قاليا
لوif راضياpleased قرباhe drew me near
لو راضيا قربا
He drove me away, hating me;
had he been pleased, he would have drawn me near.
عنof الجفاestrangement اعرباhe spoke openly
عن الجفا اعربا
وبالقلىand in hatred أغرباhe went to extremes
وبالقلى أغربا
He spoke openly of estrangement,
and went to extremes in hatred.
ياO صبهhis lovesick lover اصبرbe patient فذيfor this is
يا صبه اصبر فذي
بعضsome of فنونthe ways الصباyouth
بعض فنون الصبا
O you who love him, be patient, for this
is one of youth's ways.
ذنوبthe sins ذيof one with صبوةpassion
ذنوب ذي صبوة
عليهagainst him لنwill not تكتباbe recorded
عليه لن تكتبا
The sins of one in love
will never be recorded against him.
