    You dwelt in the heart's dark core, in the isthmus of the breast.

    My heart melted for you, and my thought was lost in you.

    فطاوعكم كلي وراح ولم يدر

    You sought to destroy my whole being through love of you;

    my whole being yielded to you and departed, unknowing.

    You folded my ribs, in love of you, around the blaze

    of a passion more grievous, to whoever knows it, than burning coals.

    I die for you when your beauty is absent from me,

    and live through remembrance of you when it stirs in my inmost soul.

    I awaken when the camel-driver sings your praise,

    and grow drunk on the meaning of your praise, without wine.

    I circle around you in thought's ecstatic flight, forever,

    and in you traverse the expanse of land and sea.

    بدولتكم أرضى لدى النهى والأمر

    I am distracted from this age and its people;

    with your sovereignty I am content, in prohibition and command.

    جمعت بكم سرى وأعطيتهم جهرى

    For your sake I am a stranger among my own people;

    I gathered my inward self in you and gave them my outward self.

    My days at your monastery's gate are feast days,

    and every night with you is the Night of Decree.

    By God, how many a night within your courts

    my spirit danced until the rising of dawn!

    وفيكم ضيائي لا بطالعة البدر

    I sang of love for you, not of gazelles in a sandy waste;

    my radiance is in you, not in the rising full moon.

    You are my spirit's heaven and the lamp of its horizon,

    its lofty constellations and its brilliant star.

    Through you the parts of my being revived and were effaced,

    through their arising, from all but you for life's span.

    You struck the courts of my inmost soul with a shock

    of love: my strength collapsed, and my resolve grew frail.

    To you I complain of you; and, by your right,

    I divested myself of Zayd and Amr before you.

    Through you I have no need of humankind's concerns,

    yet I am needy before the lofty glory of your threshold.

    I resounded in your blessings between my two fastenings,

    and through your might my worth rose above my people's.

    My honor became safeguarded, my outward bearing

    lofty, and my station displayed in the noblest seat.

    My heart has no aim other than nearness to you,

    though it has melted from the pain of separation.

    By your right, O neighbors of the mountain pass, bestow

    union upon your humble servant; estrangement brings him low.

    Grant him, my masters, a glance

    whose sweet essence makes perfume's fragrance sweeter.

    فقد غاب من ضر البعاد عن الصبر

    Do not sever his hopes of union with you;

    the hurt of distance has left him beyond patience.

    Love has conquered him with an army

    bold and deadly with bright swords and dusky lances.

    He has become a captive in love of you, and has

    none but you to save him here from captivity's abasement.

    فهل من دواء من رحيق لمى الثغر

    With the serpents of your tresses you stung his heart;

    is there a cure in the nectar of the mouth's dusky lips?

    Is there a kindly white hand to tend his plight

    and bring him ease out of his ordeal's hardship?

    His heart is burning, and from its dwelling's confines

    it cast sparks that in appearance resembled a palace.

    His eye is drowsy, yet its cloud—

    its unbroken streaming—has surpassed the rain.

    فما ذا الجفا منكم حميتم من الغدر

    You know his plight, you who know love best of all;

    what is this estrangement from you—may you be shielded from treachery?

    If this rejection is for some lapse that appeared,

    your exalted pardon is greater than the sin.

    But if it is aggression against him, one such as you

    is, in character, above oppression and injustice.

    ومن بحركم فيض العطا دائماً يجري

    To you are ascribed kindness, compassion, and praise;

    from your sea the flood of bounty always flows.

    By God, O moons in humankind's firmament, O

    suns amid the worlds' darkness, in the eyes of those who ponder,

    وعن جرم أمر القتل قد نص في الذكر

    abandon severance, for severance is death to a lover;

    the crime of killing is expressly set down in Scripture.

    Heal love's poor little wretch with a glance

    whose loftiness will bear him to the world of Command.

    Let him witness nearness made real, and let

    the presence of closeness unveil itself to him from within the curtained chamber.

    Let him be favored with you in a solitude enveloped

    by a hidden veil, with the blessing of concealment around it.

    Let him, through you, unveil secrets he has concealed

    from creation, fearing folding and unfolding in the decree.

    And tell him: 'Here we are; approach, and let us not fear.

    You are saved from estrangement and bitter misery.'

    O dear beloveds of the heart of the bewildered, lovesick one,

    who, through you, fashioned thought's pearls with poetry's pen,

    وراح بهز الخصر يسبح في الحصر

    with a twist of your hair you stole the core of his awareness;

    and at the swaying of the waist he went swimming in confinement.

    From the spell of an eye beside which Babylon's magic is less,

    his inflamed eye began reciting 'By Time.'

    وحاربه الواشي وكل على عذر

    The reproachers denied his ordeal and suffering;

    the talebearer fought him, and each had an excuse.

    The faultfinders' blame dragged on, and there rose,

    despite his weakness, the watcher's voice, tending toward deceit.

    The envious increased their talk against you,

    in hostility toward him; surely the envious one is in loss.

    At every instant, in the manifestations of your beauty

    and their arising, his drunkenness mounts upon drunkenness.

    Do not neglect those claims, nor strip away

    the love of one who, lost in you, has passed beyond all bounds.

    He cries to you: 'Help, my masters! For I

    am undone, and my burden's ordeal has weighed down my back.'

    My hopes have none but you, and you are

    in my eyes the light of the eye, for bondsman and free.

    If my reproachers saw you as I see you,

    my state would please them, and they would follow my path.

    على كل حال سادتي منكم جبري

    I am content with you, and hope that you will be content with me;

    in every state, my masters, my mending comes from you.
