Beloved! What expedient can the heart devise?
O beloved ones, what stratagem can the heart devise?
Behold, it tosses in the embers of love’s torment.
And here it writhes in the embers of longing.
وأينand where لهfor it منany قوةstrength يرتديit clothes itself بهاwith it
وأين له من قوة يرتدي بها
وصبرand patience وبرقand the lightning الصبرof patience ياO حبlove خلبrainless; deceptive
وصبر وبرق الصبر يا حب خلب
Where can it find a strength to clothe itself in,
And where can it find strength to clothe itself in,
or patience? Patience’s lightning, O Love, is a rainless deception.
And patience, when patience's lightning, O love, brings no rain?

It hopes that God will make all well through contentment
It hopes that God will favor it with contentment,
and dispel its care whenever it spends the night in dread.
And dispel worry—all it has spent the night fearing.

Then the time comes, by God’s gentle grace, for the decree to turn
So the time has come, through God's kindness, for fate to turn
into contentment, and all it had spent the night dreading is erased.
Into contentment, and all it has spent the night fearing will be erased.

The honored standing of Zahra’s father—Taha—is my means
And the standing of Taha, al-Zahra's father, is my means of approach
to God: it banishes anguish, and victory draws near.
To God; it banishes distress, and victory breaks through.
