وسطت بشوكتها على الأحباب
The eyes of fair maidens ravage minds,
The eyes of graceful maidens ravaged minds.
assailing their lovers with their thorns.
And with their might they assailed the lovers.

وتأملت من بعدها بحراب
They shoot at hearts that love has set pounding,
And they shot at hearts already harmed by passion.
then take careful aim from afar with spears.
And afterward they gazed with spears.

God! What havoc eyes wreak, and what deeds they do—
God save us from the eyes' deadly assault and their deeds!
they are the greatest cause of love:
They are the greatest cause of calamity.

لكن إلى الصدقاء والأصحاب
stabbing, potent, murderous,
Ever stabbing, ever active, ever killing—
yet only through dark pupils and arching lids.
But toward friends and companions.

The languor of their eyelids aided them, and they gained mastery;
The eyelids' languor aided them, so they became sovereign.
they invaded, having captured even the lions of the wild.
And they raided, having already captured the forest's beasts of prey.

Wounding—yet without any limb to wound;
Wounding, yet without limbs.
sorceresses—yet without a book of spells.
Bewitching, yet without a book.

With their languishing glance they broke kings—and many a youth
They broke kings through their own brokenness; and many a youth
have they warred against while he stood in the prayer niche.
They have fought while he was in the prayer niche.

Treachery is an ingrained trait within their nature,
For treachery is a fixed trait in their very being.
and theirs is a pride too lofty to heed reproach.
And they are too proud to hear reproach.

In them God displays power despite their frailty:
In them is God's power, despite their weakness:
from the thresholds they strike at people's breasts.
They cast the foremost of men away from the thresholds.
