Halt, O driver of the white camels, for their dust

has kindled morning light within my heart and stirred it.

She followed in the travelers’ tracks; it was only

the lure of your voice, when you spoke, that sent her flying.

She left me the sickly body and resolved to depart,

and I began always watching for news of her.

She is excused—yes, by love!—for she

has parted from her neighbor after union.

What do the reproachers say about her,

when God accepts her excuses out of mercy?

He decreed separation for her, and after it befell,

cast her fire into every part of her.

She concealed love’s suffering, yet against her will

the eye forever lays bare her secrets.

Alas for her! She is indeed a soul

robbed in sorrow of her home and resting place.

O driver of the white camels, go slowly and be gentle with her,

for distance has put her camp and her visiting-place far away.

And may He who decreed separation turn it back

to union, with mercy for her tears and burning anguish,

so she may be well, gathered together after her scattering,

and nearness, by its nature, may set her states aright.

I swear by those faces, even though

estrangement has hidden their moons from us:

indeed, we keep the old covenant in our love for her.

We love her dwellings and adore her home,

and we love whoever visited the abodes for her sake

and saw her lights, even through her veil.

O my two companions, halt and behold the eye of a man

that has sent forth its rains like a freely flowing torrent.
