I draw a spark from the light of your radiance,

O sons of al-Zahra and of the light

منه عيسى لمعة الفيض التمس

منه عيسى لمعة الفيض التمس

لكم من عالم الغيب الندا

لكم من عالم الغيب الندا

from which Jesus sought a gleam of overflowing grace.

Bounty comes to you from the realm of the unseen,

وسواكم منكم نال الندا

وسواكم منكم نال الندا

فجركم قد لاح في أفق الهدى

فجركم قد لاح في أفق الهدى

and others have received bounty from you.

Your dawn has shone on the horizon of guidance;

وبطور القرب ليلاً مذ بدا

وبطور القرب ليلاً مذ بدا

ظن موسى أنه نار قبس

ظن موسى أنه نار قبس

and when it appeared by night upon the Mount of Nearness,

Moses thought it a fire from which to take a brand.

لا أرى بين الورى الأكم

لا أرى بين الورى الأكم

حيث كل الخير من جدواكم

حيث كل الخير من جدواكم

I see none but you among humankind,

for all goodness comes from your bounty.

أنتم حصن لمن والاكم

أنتم حصن لمن والاكم

لا يوالي الدهر من عاداكم

لا يوالي الدهر من عاداكم

You are a fortress for whoever is loyal to you;

Time does not befriend whoever opposes you—

لا ولا يعطي من الحق نفس

لا ولا يعطي من الحق نفس

خالف الأمر الإلهي وارتضى

خالف الأمر الإلهي وارتضى

no, nor is he granted a breath from the Truth.

He disobeyed the divine command and chose

أن يرى بالذل في نار الغضا

أن يرى بالذل في نار الغضا

مات مخذولاً وفي البلوى مضى

مات مخذولاً وفي البلوى مضى

to be seen, abased, in the fire of ghada wood.

He died forsaken and passed away amid affliction;

ذاك ظلماً حاد عن نهج الرضى

ذاك ظلماً حاد عن نهج الرضى

أنه آخر آي في عبس

أنه آخر آي في عبس

that man wrongfully strayed from the path of divine approval.

He is the one described in the last verses of ʿAbasa.
