You forsook me, O beloved, and reproach dragged on

I left, so the blame prolonged, O beloved

from the faultfinders, and discord grew.

Of hardship, and the discord increased

لقد لاموا ضل الرأي منهم

ومفتون بحبك لا يلام

Indeed they blamed me—their judgment went astray;

They blamed the one misguided among them

and one enthralled by love of you cannot be blamed.

And the one infatuated with your love is not to be blamed

بحق هواك يا من من جفاه

By the sanctity of your love, O you through whose estrangement

By the right of your love, O he from whom estrangement

I swoon when you are mentioned, so great is my ecstasy;

I become unconscious when I remember out of intense affection

you say the wine has weighed heavily upon me.

They say about me that wine has overwhelmed him

And a woman said, 'Console yourself with love of Salma.'

And a speaker joked about love

So I said to her, 'Peace be upon Salma.'
