تعذب بالهجران من ليس يصبر
By your eyes, O gazelle, how long
With your eyes, O this gazelle, for how long
will you torment with estrangement one who cannot endure?
Will you torture with estrangement one who cannot endure patiently?

سقيم باذيال التلهف يعثر
You played coy until he was humbled, his body wasted;
You have become so pampered that you have been humiliated, and your body has become emaciated,
sick, he stumbles over the trailing hems of yearning.
Sick with the frills of yearning stumbling.

And a bygone time, O Saʿd, when my little gazelle was
And time has passed, O Saad, that was spent with my companion,
my companion then, and the moonlit night shone—
Cheering me, and the night blossoms like the full moon.

بصارع مضنى الحب اذ يتذكر
I wept for it when I remembered; and passion
I cried for him when I remembered, and love
wrestles with love's weary sufferer whenever he remembers.
Wrestles with the agonizing love when it remembers.

قديم ودين الود لا يتغير
O my soul's desire, love's covenant
The soul I desire and the covenant of its love
is ancient, and the creed of affection never changes.
Is old, and the religion of affection does not change.

Be gentle with my plight, for my heart is distraught with love;
Be kind to my state if my heart has been ignited for him
within it fire blazes on every side.
With fire from all sides flaming.

على الحزن والافراح تجري وتقطر
And an eye pouring forth clouds, unsettled by weeping,
And an eye that wipes the clouds, its shedding tears disquiets it,
flows and drips in sorrow and in joy.
Over sorrow and joy they flow and drip.

Whenever it sees the plains of Salʿ and Hajir,
When it saw the terrain of Sala and its rock,
an autumn raincloud comes pouring down from it.
Tomorrow the fleeting beauty from it pours forth.

اسيرة وجد بالنوى تتفطر
In those regions, the love-distraught one has a heart,
By those places the doe capers for him,
captive to longing, breaking apart through separation.
Captivated, and the resolve in intentions crumbles.

Upon it lies a radiance from the talisman-sealed secret,
Upon it from the hidden adornment is the splendor
revealing matters to passion, which stands bewildered.
That confuses for love that has perplexed.

So, amid love's smooth and rugged terrain, I could not tell
So I don’t know from the plain of love and its sorrow
whether my time was night or radiant noon.
Whether my night has been brightened or it is the blossoming forenoon.

And my early morning, indeed its edges have softened, and estrangement
with its cruelty, folds and unfolds my heart.
With its harshness folds my heart and unfurls it.

My form, O Umaym, was once recognizable,
My person, O faithful friend, was known
and behold, the gazelle's ravages have made it unrecognizable.
And here he is from the ravages of the gazelle unrecognizable.

He shot me with an arrow from his languid eyelids,
He threw at me an arrow from one sick in his eyelids
and bloodied a heart where his essence lay hidden.
So it bloodied a heart in which its meaning is concealed.

Were he not in my heart, I would say: Shoot, and command
And were it not for him in my heart I would have said: aim and judge
as you wish; show no mercy, for the choice is yours.
However you wish, do not show mercy for you have the choice.

I donned the armor of beautiful patience, yet passion has
I shielded myself with beautiful patience, and for passion
swords unsheathed against my vanished patience.
Swords over my nonexistent patience brandished.

غرام على كتمانه لست اقدر
So if I say, 'I will not weep,' my tears are poured forth
So if I say “I do not cry” it wipes my tears away,
by a passion I have no power to conceal.
A passion whose concealment I cannot endure.

And if I say, 'I will weep,' my reproacher utters lies;
And if I say “I cry” then shame on the unjust accuser,
yet if he kept company with fairness, the love-stricken would be excused.
And even if the equitable accompanied the ardent, he would excuse.

Peace upon my full moon and the days of his nearness,
Greetings to my early morn and the days of his nearness
for, in longing for them, I pass into absence and return.
For I vanish and appear for them full of fervor.
