طرنا بأجنحة من الأشجان

To the Ghawth, ʿAbd al-Qadir al-Jilani.

To the succor, Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani,

We flew on wings of longing,

we flew on wings of sorrow.

وإلى ثرى عتباته جئنا لني

وإلى ثرى عتباته جئنا لني

ل الأمن والآمال والإحسان

ل الأمن والآمال والإحسان

And came to the dust of his thresholds, seeking to attain

And to the dust of his thresholds we came to attain

Safety, our hopes, and gracious favor.

وحفيد حيدرة العلى الشان

For he is the son of Muhammad’s daughter, the best of humankind,

And a descendant of Haydara, exalted in rank:

ضئضئي سدرة أصلها السلطان

The gray falcon, a link in a chain of radiance,

Of pure stock—a lote-tree whose root is the Sovereign;

of my ancestral stock—a lote tree whose root is the sovereign.

وسلل آل عن مراتب قدرهم

وسلل آل عن مراتب قدرهم

وسموها يتقاصر القمران

وسموها يتقاصر القمران

A scion of a House before whose degrees of worth

And a scion of a house whose ranks of worth

And sublimity the sun and moon fall short.

and lofty height the sun and moon cannot attain.

غوث شموس سماء دولته انجلت

غوث شموس سماء دولته انجلت

في الشرق ثم سرت إلى الأكوان

The Ghawth—the sun in the sky of his dominion shone forth

A succor: the suns in his dominion's sky shone forth

In the East, then coursed through all creation.

وإمام إرشاد بكعبة هديه

طافت شيوخ العجم والعربان

طافت شيوخ العجم والعربان

An imam of guidance, around the Kaaba of whose guidance

The non-Arab and Arab shaykhs circumambulated.

the masters of non-Arabs and Arabs have circled.

وله كرامات عجائب سرها

وله كرامات عجائب سرها

تبدو لغاية آخر الدوران

تبدو لغاية آخر الدوران

His saintly miracles are wonders whose secret

And he has miracles, the wonders of whose mystery

Will stand revealed until time’s final turn.

ولكم له من نفحة وعناية

ولكم له من نفحة وعناية

حلت عقال الخائف اللهفان

حلت عقال الخائف اللهفان

How many a breath of grace and loving care is his,

And how many a breath of grace and care from him

Loosing the tether of the frightened and anguished!

has untied the tether of the fearful, anguished soul.

سلطان كبكبة الرجال وصاحب ال

قدم الرفيع وفارس الميدان

قدم الرفيع وفارس الميدان

Sovereign of the company of spiritual men, possessor of the—

Sovereign of the host of spiritual men, possessor of the

—lofty standing, and knight of the field;

exalted foot, and knight of the field.

والسيد السند الجليل المرتجي

والسيد السند الجليل المرتجي

لدفاع خطب نوائب الحدثان

لدفاع خطب نوائب الحدثان

The master, the support, the august one in whom hope is placed,

And the august master and support, looked to in hope

To repel grave calamities and the vicissitudes of time.

to ward off the ordeal of time's calamities.

My master Muhyi al-Din, God’s falcon, the Po—

Around him the millstone of the Path turned among humankind,

And upon him turned the millstone of the Way among humankind,

As did the millstone of loftiness, bounty, and mystical knowledge.

and the millstone of high rank, excellence, and spiritual knowledge.

علم لبطحا الشرق عنقاً مغرب

علم لبطحا الشرق عنقاً مغرب

بحر الحقائق واضح البرهان

بحر الحقائق واضح البرهان

A landmark across the East’s broad expanse, a phoenix of the West;

A beacon for the eastern plain, a wondrous phoenix,

A sea of spiritual truths, clear in proof;

a sea of truths, clear in proof.

غياث من ناداه يوم كريهةٍ

غياث من ناداه يوم كريهةٍ

ومغيث نادبه بكل زمان

ومغيث نادبه بكل زمان

Rescuer of whoever calls upon him on a day of calamity,

Succor for whoever calls upon him on a day of distress,

And deliverer of whoever appeals to him in every age;

and helper of whoever invokes him, at all times.

شيخ الشيوخ العارفين بربهم

شيخ الشيوخ العارفين بربهم

وإمام أهل الوجد والإذعان

وإمام أهل الوجد والإذعان

Shaykh of the shaykhs who know their Lord,

Master of the masters who know their Lord,

And imam of the people of ecstasy and submission;

and imam of the people of ecstasy and submission.

وأجل أرباب الخشوع وعين أص

وأجل أرباب الخشوع وعين أص

حاب الخضوع وسيد الأعيان

حاب الخضوع وسيد الأعيان

Most exalted of the masters of reverence, foremost among the com—

And the greatest of the reverent, foremost among the

—panions of humility, and master of the notables;

people of submission, and master of the eminent.

وأمير جيش الصالحين وصاحب ال

وأمير جيش الصالحين وصاحب ال

متين الهيكل الصمداني

متين الهيكل الصمداني

Commander of the righteous host, and possessor of the—

And commander of the army of the righteous, possessor of the

—sturdy, divinely fashioned frame;

mighty, divine frame.

رار بل قنديلها النوراني

Head of the assembly of spiritual men in the presence of the mys—

And head of the council of spiritual men in the presence of

—teries—nay, its radiant lamp;

والجهبذ الفرد الغيور الضي

والجهبذ الفرد الغيور الضي

غم الشهم الهمام العارف الرباني

غم الشهم الهمام العارف الرباني

The consummate, peerless, fiercely protective master, the li—

And the peerless, zealous sage, the

—on, gallant and intrepid, a godly knower;

lion, noble and valiant, the godly knower.

قطب تفرد مظهراً وعنايةً

في الصالحين فما له من ثاني

A Pole peerless in manifestation and providential care,

A spiritual pole, unique in manifestation and grace

Among the righteous he has no equal.

وببيت عز شامخ الأركان

His spiritual stations rose high through a pure lineage,

His ranks grew great through a pure origin

And a noble house whose pillars tower.

From the mantle a breath of grace and a spiritual bond enfolded him,

And from the cloak, a breath and a bond enveloped him,

Prophetic and Hasanid in designation.

سر الولاية باهر اللمعان

Upon him, from the lofty station of Ali al-Murtada,

And upon him, from the exalted station of Ali al-Murtada,

Rests the secret of sainthood, dazzling in brilliance.

He is my refuge amid calamities and my haven,

In him I take refuge, and shelter in his shade

From the guile of a bewildering, treacherous age.

تسمو يدي ويفك عقد رهاني

This falcon suffices me: through the success of his wing

May his spacious shrine forever remain an abode of ac—

—ceptance, where mercies and divine favor descend,

ما طاب من ذكريه قلب متيم

قلق كوته محبة الأوطان

قلق كوته محبة الأوطان

As long as remembrance of him delights a love-enthralled heart,

so long as remembrance of him gladdens a love-stricken heart,

Restless, seared by love of its homelands,

أو ما بحسن الظن مدت راحة

أو ما بحسن الظن مدت راحة

Or as long as a palm is outstretched in fair and trusting hope.
