I marveled at base men who wronged an envied man,

a nobleman beneath whose glory the full moon now sinks.

They clothed him in qualities that were their own,

so from the very heart of their slander, honor clothed him.

And nothing befell them but disgrace and hardship,

and the burden of sins, shortcomings, and humiliation.

    And the man they envy remains at the summit of eminence;

over him lies a veil of gracious favors, despite them.

Nor did the base men's scratching at his worth harm him,

when he is held in esteem in the minds of the noble.

Indeed, they sought to forsake the one aided, yet he

has victory from the Lord's hand, despite them.

They took comfort in time's darkness, but they forgot

that the order of the universe holds a dawn within its folds.

They have two excuses within them, both calling for their rejection:

for their origin is an excuse, and their ignorance is an excuse.
