وخوضand plunging into الطريقةthe Way خوضplunging into العطبruin
Treading the path of the men is proper conduct;
Walking the path of cultured men
And plunging into the Way is plunging into ruin.
And traversing the path, traversing peril
فمنso whoever نازعchallenges الشيخthe sheikh فيconcerning أهلهhis people
بذمwith disparagement وأملand hopes for منهfrom him الأربthe desired end
Whoever challenges the sheikh concerning his people,
So one who contends with the elder regarding his family
With disparagement, yet hopes to have his wish granted by him,
With blame and hopes from him for gain
كصاعدlike one ascending سطحa roof بلاwithout سلمa ladder
وطالبand one seeking علمknowledge بقطعby cutting الحطبfirewood
Is like someone climbing to a roof without a ladder,
Is like one climbing a roof without a ladder
And someone seeking knowledge by chopping firewood,
Or seeking knowledge by cutting wood
وثاقبand one piercing سيناءSinai فيwith إبرةa needle
لعمركby your life أنthat (possibly إن, meaning 'not') نراكwe see you إلاexcept تعبweariness
And someone piercing Sinai with a needle—
Or piercing Mount Sinai with a needle
By your life, we see in you nothing but weariness.
By your life! We see you do nothing but toil

تسدbars علىto الغيرothers بابthe door of الطلبpetition
For the hand of the folk, among their own,
For the hand of a people in its family affairs
Bars the door of petition to others.
Shuts out others from the door of request
ضلوعthe ribs of الجهالةignorance معوجةcrooked
تضيعcauses to be lost الطريقthe way علىfor منwhoever ذهبsets out
The ribs of ignorance are crooked;
The ribs of ignorance are crooked
They cause whoever sets out to lose the way.
Lost is the road for whomever went

عجبa wonder وجهلand ignorance of السلوكwayfaring العجبthe wonder
And treading the path without intention
And walked the path heedlessly
Is a wonder, and ignorance of wayfaring is the wonder.
Strange is the face of this strange conduct
