O lightning that flared between al-Sham and Yemen,

And kindled the fire of a heart that melted in sorrow,

And in its coils kept winding the inner heart around

The blaze of love that seethed with longing and grief.

O lightning of the friends, you kept my inflamed eye awake,

And scattered from it the band of slumber.

And you began recalling tidings of al-Ghuwayr and Dhi

Najd, and the companions of that lovely spring abode.

So whenever your branch quivered over some tidings,

The realm of forms within my body was shaken by it.

And whenever night shrouded you, it maddened

My mind; my patience fought me and deserted me.

By God, O their lightning, did you glimpse them before dawn

As they reached al-Dahna and the traces of old encampments?

And did you blaze like me with burning longing and distress

For them, casting aside patience in secret and in public?

Truly, by your life, they have stolen my heart,

So much so that I have sold them my heart for no price.

And, lost in them, I became oblivious to the world and its inhabitants,

And to my existence, my state, and my dwelling.

People’s company is not my desire if I part from them,

Nor are dwelling-places my homeland if I lose them.

They are the spirit’s birth in my being’s ascent—nay,

The leaders of its temple in duty and traditional observances.

I complain to them of the burning in a breast that, on its path,

Through uprightness, has vanished from the realm of existence.

Alas for the pain of separation, for it has

Within thought’s dominion, feet set upon tribulations.

And ah, for separation from them! By God, on the day they went far away,

I did not think my lifetime would stretch on.
