We commune with you, O dwellers of Aleppo the Gray,

With the plea of one whose flames have neared the shooting stars.

And we complain to you of anguish and sorrow that have harmed us,

And burdens of care whose weight has destroyed the heart.

Our souls come into your presence, seeking refuge,

Like a lovesick lover who, brokenhearted, poured blood from his eye.

    فكم فرج الباري لاجلكم كربا

    So stand at God's door to relieve our anguish;

For how often the Creator has relieved distress for your sake!

And among us, how many a humble, helpless servant is yours,

Whom separation has assailed, as the crosswind fanned his flames.

And among us, how many a humble, helpless servant is yours,

Whom separation has assailed, as the crosswind fanned his flames.

Hear now, O sons of al-Rifa‘i, the Ghawth, descendants of the one

To whom God made non-Arabs and Arabs submit,

And bestowed upon him great standing and grace,

And bounty; for his exalted countenance's sake, He made hardship easy.

And bestowed upon him great standing and grace,

And bounty; for his exalted countenance's sake, He made hardship easy.

Form a strengthened rank of spirits,

With standing before God, through which He bestows bounty.

    بحقكمو كونوا لاسقامنا طبا

    We have fallen ill with the disease of worry, O those we love;

By your worth, be a cure for our ailments.

You are far away, yet no distance is too far for you,

And your spirits directly behold both far and near.

So circle round, though the place of visitation is far, in passionate longing

For us, and remember the claim of affection among kin.
