A full moon forsook fidelity and treated me coldly.

And drew out my soul with his coquetry, yet was not content.

وأطار قلباً طالما لوصاله

قد قلبته يد الرجاء على شفا

And sent flying a heart that, for union with him, had long

Been turned about by hope’s hand upon the brink.

ورمى بسهم الطرف طرف حشاشة

ورمى بسهم الطرف طرف حشاشة

من حرها طرفي المؤلم ماغفا

من حرها طرفي المؤلم ماغفا

And shot his gaze’s arrow at the edge of life’s last remnant;

Because of its heat, my aching eye never dozed.

وأذلني بدلاله فجميع أو

فأتى عنا فيه ومدته صفا

And he humbled me with his coquetry; so all—or ... [fragment unclear].

Then suffering came within it, while his time was serene.

مهما أساء أراه إحساناً وإن

يرني هفوت ولو بسهوماً عفا

Whatever wrong he does, I see it as kindness; yet if

He sees me stumble, even inadvertently, he does not pardon [reading the joined wording as a negation].

جعل التكبر ديدناً وطبيعة

فقطعت وقتي لوعة وتلهفا

He made arrogance his habit and his nature,

So I spent my time in anguish and yearning.

ولقد تظاهر بالتعالي عدوةً

فلبست إجلالاً له درع الخفا

فلبست إجلالاً له درع الخفا

And indeed he flaunted his haughtiness as an enemy,

So, in reverence for him, I donned the armor of concealment.
