By God, how have you borne our absence?

O you who stole our reason from us!

Have you forgotten? Tell me how you

were, as you know, and how we were.

This night has not fallen without

our going mad with longing for you.

    God knows we never imagined

it would be said: 'You have borne our absence.'

May the Most Merciful never, after

you, make even an enemy's tooth laugh.

If it pleases you that sickness

be ours, we have melted away and lost our way.

And hear our dust: for you we have filled

the darkness with yearning and groaning.

Why not, when by the spear of your

waist—yes, and its slenderness—we were pierced?

So abandon estrangement, and with fidelity

    treat your tormented, love-crazed lover.

For you, upon the soul's branch, there is a bird

    whose wounded heart sang.

It sang, and the deadly impact of your

eye within it—yes, and love—both rang out.

So your pleasure is the essence of its aim,

and meeting you is its ultimate wish.
