بأعتابat the thresholds of تاجthe crown of المرسلينthe messengers التجائياmy seeking refuge
بأعتاب تاج المرسلين التجائيا
ومنand from فضلهhis bounty الفياضoverflowing كلall رجائياmy hope
ومن فضله الفياض كل رجائيا
At the thresholds of the crown of the messengers I seek refuge.
With the thresholds of the Crown of the Messengers I take refuge
And all my hope springs from his overflowing bounty.
And from his abundant grace is all my hope
هوhe السيفthe sword سيفthe sword of اللَهGod قاطعcutting down منwhoever بغىtransgressed
هو السيف سيف اللَه قاطع من بغى
عليَّagainst me وغوثيand my succor إنif دهانيassailed me زمانياmy time
عليَّ وغوثي إن دهاني زمانيا
He is the sword, God's sword, cutting down whoever transgresses
He is the sword, the sword of God, severing whoever is aggressive
Against me, and my succor if my time assails me.
To me, and my savior if time tries me
سراجthe lamp of الورىhumankind بابthe gate of الرجاhope هيكلthe temple of الرضىcontentment
سراج الورى باب الرجا هيكل الرضى
عظيمmighty الحمىthe sanctuary ليfor me أنif خشيتI feared الأعادياthe enemies
عظيم الحمى لي أن خشيت الأعاديا
The lamp of humankind, the gate of hope, the temple of contentment,
The lantern of existence, the door of hope, the temple of contentment
A mighty sanctuary for me, should I fear my foes.
Of great protection for me, that I fear the enemies
نصيريmy defender إذاwhen غابis absent النصيرthe defender وملجئيand my refuge
نصيري إذا غاب النصير وملجئي
وحصنيand my fortress إذwhen أهمcaused distress الزمانtime اعترانياassailed me
وحصني إذ أهم الزمان اعترانيا
My defender when no defender is there, and my refuge,
My supporter when the supporter is absent, and my refuge
And my fortress when time distresses and assails me.
And my fortress when time confuses me
رسولthe Messenger of الهدىguidance حامىprotector of الغريبthe stranger الذيwho بهin him اسfirst part of 'sought refuge'
رسول الهدى حامى الغريب الذي به اس
تجارcompletion of 'sought refuge' إذاwhen لمdid not يلفfind فيamong الناسpeople حامياa protector
تجار إذا لم يلف في الناس حاميا
The Messenger of guidance, protector of the stranger who sought in him
The Messenger of guidance, protector of the stranger, through whom I learne
Refuge when he found no protector among people.
d to be content when people are not protective
غيورfiercely protective علىagainst إيذاءharm to أشبالthe cubs of بنتهhis daughter
غيور على إيذاء أشبال بنته
إذاwhen ماever (emphatic) انتحىwithdraws منone who كانwas خلاa close friend مواسياcomforting
إذا ما انتحى من كان خلا مواسيا
Fiercely protective against harm to his daughter's cubs,
Zealous of the harm to the cubs of his daughter
Whenever one who was a comforting friend withdraws.
When he who had been intimate became estranged
بطرفةwith a blink of عينan eye منهfrom him ينقلبturns into القضاfate
بطرفة عين منه ينقلب القضا
رضاءcontentment وينسيand he makes forget العبدthe servant ماwhat كانwas ماضياpast
رضاء وينسي العبد ما كان ماضيا
At a blink of his eye, fate turns
With a glance from him destiny turns agreeable
To contentment, and he makes the servant forget what has passed.
And the servant forgets what has passed
هوhe الشهمthe noble-hearted one محبوبthe beloved of الإلهGod صفيهHis chosen one
هو الشهم محبوب الإله صفيه
ومأمونهand His trusted one فيin كلall ماthat كانhe was قاضياdecreeing
ومأمونه في كل ما كان قاضيا
He is the noble-hearted one, God's beloved, His chosen one,
He is the valiant, the beloved of God, his elect
And His trusted one in all that he has decreed.
And his trustee in all that has been decreed
هوhe الرحمةthe mercy العظمىthe greatest التيwhich جلis exalted قدرهاits worth
هو الرحمة العظمى التي جل قدرها
وفجرand a dawn لليلfor the night of الكفرunbelief قدindeed جاءhas come ماحياeffacing
وفجر لليل الكفر قد جاء ماحيا
He is the greatest mercy, whose worth is exalted,
He is the greatest mercy, exalted is his value
And a dawn that has come to erase the night of unbelief.
And the dawn for the night of disbelief has come effacing
حبيبa beloved one متىwhenever استجدتهI sought his generosity فيin ملمةa calamity
حبيب متى استجدته في ملمة
كفانيhe spared me هموميmy cares ثمthen انindeed (uncertain reading) حمائياmy protection
كفاني همومي ثم ان حمائيا
A beloved one: whenever I seek his generosity in calamity,
Beloved, when I plead to him in adversity
He spares me my cares; then, indeed, [he is] my protection.
He relieves my worries, then becomes my protector
عظيمmighty إذاwhen قابلتI set against كربىmy anguish بجاههwith his standing اسfirst part of 'I deemed slight'
عظيم إذا قابلت كربى بجاهه اس
تقليتcompletion of 'I deemed slight' كربيmy anguish واحتقرتand I scorned بلائياmy affliction
تقليت كربي واحتقرت بلائيا
Mighty—when I set my anguish against his standing, I deemed
Great when I face a major calamity through his status
My anguish slight, and scorned my affliction.
I lessen my calamity and despise my tribulation
أغثنيhelp me أباO father of الزهراءal-Zahra وارحمand have mercy on شكايتيmy complaint
أغثني أبا الزهراء وارحم شكايتي
فإنيfor indeed I إلىto علياthe heights of حماكyour sanctuary انتمائياmy belonging
فإني إلى عليا حماك انتمائيا
Help me, O father of al-Zahra, and have mercy on my complaint.
Help me, father of Az-Zahra, and have mercy on my complaint
For I belong to the heights of your sanctuary.
For to the Most High Ali is my affiliation
بفضلكby your bounty ياO جدgrandfather of الحسينal-Husayn وبالذيand by Him who
بفضلك يا جد الحسين وبالذي
حماكprotected you منfrom الأعداthe enemies وأبقاكand kept you عالياexalted
حماك من الأعدا وأبقاك عاليا
By your bounty, O grandfather of al-Husayn, and by Him who
By your grace, grandfather of Hussein, and by Him
Protected you from enemies and kept you exalted,
Who protected you from enemies and kept you lofty
تكرمbe generous علىto كسرىmy brokenness بجبرwith mending فليسfor there is no ليfor me
تكرم على كسرى بجبر فليس لي
سواكother than you ابa father يرجىlooked to with hope لإصلاحto set right حالياmy condition
سواك اب يرجى لإصلاح حاليا
Graciously mend my brokenness, for I have
Be generous to the brokenhearted, for I have none
No father but you to look to for setting my condition right.
Other than you, a father, to hope will improve my state
عليكupon you صلاةthe blessing of اللَهGod ياO كاشفdispeller of البلاaffliction
عليك صلاة اللَه يا كاشف البلا
مدىthroughout الدهرtime ماas long as أسعفتyou aided بالسؤلwith the requested boon داعياa supplicant
مدى الدهر ما أسعفت بالسؤل داعيا
God's blessing be upon you, O dispeller of affliction,
Upon you, the prayers of God, O Remover of Afflictions
For all time, so long as you grant a supplicant his request.
As long as I have called out in request
